Back in September while visiting the Mets Instructional league, I overhead a conversation between Brandon Nimmo and Dominic Smith and the advice that Nimmo gave Smith was how to use Savannah’s Grayson Stadium to his advantage.

Well the lefty first baseman took the advice to heart and this season all he has done is hit, and he may not be launching balls out of the ball park yet, but he sure is spraying them all over the field.

The Mets 2013 #1 draft pick played his first pro season with the Gulf Coast Mets, hit three home runs and drove in 22 runs in 167 at bats. He was then promoted to Kingsport Mets  and was 4 for 6 in three games.

In 2014, Smith skipped Brooklyn and went straight to Savannah and so for this season he is batting  .293/.353/.357, 19 doubles, 28 RBI’s and 30 extra base hits. He has hit safely in 19 of his last 24 games, batting .385 in that span and has been a big reason why the Sand Gnats won the first half championship, have now won ten straight games and continue to lead the SAL Southern Division in the second half of the season.

Smith leads the Sand Gnats in at bats (300), hits (88), and total bases (107)

The top prospect is living up to the hype, and maybe Grayson Stadium has changed the way he has approached his at bats, but at the end of the day, if Smith continues to rake the baseball, his stay in Savannah may be short lived anyway.
