We’re about 20 days away from the MLB Draft, which is on Monday, June 3rd. Mocks continue to pour out as speculation continues for the first round. Mets have been linked to multiple names, but Zack Thompson continues to be one name that is fervently tied to their 12th overall pick. Thompson, the left-handed pitcher from University of Kentucky.

We’ve heard a lot about him, and it seems that he is the consensus speculation for now, until some more momentum picks up for another player late and close to the draft. FanGraphs further confirmed for now, with Kiley McDaniel and Eric Longenhagen stating Thompson.

12. Mets – Zack Thompson, LHP, Kentucky
Thompson has been mentioned here the most. A decision maker was in to see Elon RHP George Kirby shove last weekend. Most expect a college pitcher to be the pick.

We’ve talked about Thompson a lot, mainly that he’s a left-handed starter who throws up to 96 miles per hour, but has mid-rotation upside and some health concerns. George Kirby, the other player mentioned, is another guy to be interested in, but has similar upside. A former 24th round Mets Pick in 2016 out of Rye High School in Rye, New York, the team was unable sign him at the time, but he has proven to be a tough miss for them in that past draft, by excelling at Elon.

Kirby has a decent four-pitch mix, sitting in the low-90’s but can touch mid-to-upper 90’s at times. Both his curve and slider have flashes of being plus, while his changeup needs more exposure. He has very nice control, and could play up on his ceiling moving forward.

Other players have been talked about, including Corbin Carroll, an athletic, yet undersized outfielder who can play center field with his plus-plus speed and hit for plus contact. His only drawbacks are that he isn’t expected to hit for more than 15 homers annually and does not seem to have a strong arm from center field. Baylor Catcher Shea Langeliers has also been discussed, a power-hitting catcher who has a plus plus arm and can field very well, but had been hampered this spring by a broken hamate bone, which is known to sap power.

Jackson Rutledge has been another player mocked to the team, and was discussed in our last update by Rey.

Other interesting stories include Jack Leiter, Al’s son has shown increased velocity, throwing up to 98 in his start on May 11th, and tossing over 95 with regularity after sitting in the low-90’s in earlier reports. This could shoot him up draft boards, as an advanced arm with previously-thought mid-ceiling stuff. However, it’s been known that he has a very high price-tag that could push the Mets’ $4,366,400 bonus out of reach. Nevertheless, he will be a wild-card.

Former Met Miguel Cairo‘s son is a top player, who has shown the ability to hit and field, and will likely be a pick in the top rounds.

Kameron Misner had been an intriguing player early, hitting for power, with plus speed, but slowed down his offensive campaign, and struck out 55 times in 53 games. He will still be a projected high pick in the first round. Hunter Bishop, however, destroyed the league with a 1.306 OPS and 22 home runs in 49 games, but will likely be out of reach, projecting to go in the first ten picks. Bishop also can run for plus speed, and looks to be a possible all-around center fielder.
