The New York Mets have recalled Drew Gagnon from Triple-A Syracuse to join the Mets bullpen. To make room for Gagnon on the 25 man roster, the Mets have optioned Chris Mazza back to Triple-A.

Gagnon is coming off of his best start of the year pitching eight scoreless innings against the Durham Bulls. In that game, Gagnon was perfect through seven innings. Overall, he has made 12 starts for Syracuse going 6-4 with a 2.15 ERA, 1.042 WHIP, 1.8 BB/9, and a 7.7 K/9.

This is the third time Gagnon has been recalled to the Majors. In his first stint with the Mets, he had a stint from April 30 to May 22 where he had seven scoreless appearances. In those appearances, he pitched 8.2 innings allowing four hits, walking one, and striking out six. After that, Gagnon’s Major League production fell off including him allowing runs in each of his last three appearances.

Notably, his last Major League appearance came on the road against the Braves. In that June 17 appearances, he allowed four earned on five hits and three walks in 1.1 innings pitched. Those runs came off of homers hit by Ozzie Albies and Brian McCann. Including this performance, Gagnon has made 14 relief appearances for the Mets this season going 3-1 with a 7.65 ERA, 1.650 WHIP, 3.2 BB/9, and a 7.2 K/9.

Mazza was recalled by the Mets on August 2, but he did not appear in any games. That includes two separate games where the Mets had a five run lead in the ninth against the Marlins. With him fully rested, he should be slotted to take Gagnon’s turn in Syracuse’s rotation. Mazza has made 11 starts for Syracuse going 3-3 with a 3.72 ERA, 1.071 WHIP, 2.2 BB/9, and a 7.7 K/9.
