Dustin Lawley, 24, is one of the prospects in big league camp, but after a great 2013 campaign where he hit 25 home runs with 92 RBIs, and was named the Florida State League player of the year, there really hasn’t been much mention of him.
Lawley was also promoted to Las Vegas (AAA) from St. Lucie (A) towards the end of the 2013 season and hit .300, with a home run, and six RBIs.
“There’s a difference,” Lawley shared Wednesday with Adam Rubin of ESPN NY regarding the difference in opposing pitchers in Class A versus Triple-A. “I don’t think it’s as big a difference as some people put it out to be because it’s still baseball, they’ve got to throw to the plate and you’ve got to hit it.”
Rubin shares that Lawley will begin 2014 at Binghamton or Las Vegas and his assignment could depend on the trickle-down from major league camp, with Cesar Puello, Matt den Dekker and Kirk Nieuwenhuis all potentially in the Las Vegas outfield.
“I have no idea,” Lawley tells Rubin when asked about where he thinks he will end up in 2014. “I really have no idea. I mean, obviously I’m hoping Vegas. But it really isn’t my choice. I guess we’ll just see.”
After a huge 2013, it would only be fitting for him to start at Vegas, especially since he did hit well in his short stint there. But as Rubin stated, with Puello, den Dekker and Nieuwenhuis, and possibly adding Cory Vaughn to the list of Vegas outfielders, Lawley may not receive the playing time that he deserves. But another big year and this time in Binghamton (AA), may just force the Mets hand to promote him again.
