Former New York Mets great and Brooklyn Cyclones manager Edgardo Alfonzo has been named the manager of the Staten Island Ferry Hawks.

The Ferry Hawks will have their inaugural season in the Atlantic League. Previously, the franchise was known as the Staten Island Yankees when they were the New York-Penn League affiliate of the New York Yankees.

This not only serves as a return to managing for Alfonzo, but it also serves as a return to the Atlantic League for him. After he was released by the Toronto Blue Jays during the 2006 season, he signed a deal with the Bridgeport Bluefish.

After just four games, he signed a minor league deal with the Mets. The following two seasons he played for the Long Island Ducks. After a season in the Japanese Leagues, he would play for the now defunct Newark Bears.

Alfonzo managed the Cyclones from 2017 – 2019. In 2019, he guided the Cyclones to what we be their first outright New York-Penn League Championship. It was also the last ever in league history as Major League Baseball would contract the league after the season.

Alfonzo’s contract was not renewed by the Mets after winning that championship. Then general manager Brodie Van Wagenen informed Alfonzo he was relieved from his duties for player development reasons.

Alfonzo accepted an ambassador role with the organization, but he has been trying to attain another coaching or managerial job with the organization. After none were offered by the Mets the past two years, Alfonzo accepted this position.

Overall, the Ferry Hawks will have a very Mets feel. In addition to Alfonzo, the team will be run by former Cyclones GM and Mets scout Gary Perone. The color scheme of the franchise is now blue and orange.
