After two consecutive 14-inning games between the New York Mets and the Philadelphia Phillies on the arms of both pitching staffs, moves needed to be made in order to not overwork the bullpen too much (in case of another extra-inning game).

The Mets have called up pitcher Dana Eveland from Las Vegas, and sent outfielder Matt den Dekker down to make room.  This is according to Adam Rubin of ESPN.

Eveland, 30, is making his first trip to the major leagues since 2012 when he did so with the Baltimore Orioles.  In his major league career, Eveland has pitched for seven clubs not including the Mets.  He owns a 19-25 record with an ERA of 5.46.  He has appeared in 114 MLB games, 61 as a starter.

Starting the Triple-A season in the bullpen, Eveland moved into the rotation in the middle of April.  On the year he is 4-1 with a 3.91 ERA.  This appears to be a move to give an extra arm in the bullpen more so than to bolster the bullpen.

Matt den Dekker drew the short straw and is heading back to Las Vegas.  Called up do to Eric Young Jr’s DL stint and kept in case of Juan Lagares’ injury being more serious than it appeared, the Mets must have felt that Lagares could probably go if he needed to and an extra arm in the pen would be more useful.

Den Dekker appeared in three games with the Mets going 0-4 with three strikeouts.
