Eric Campbell has been the Mets super sub and more so, by batting .464 (13 for 28) when David Wright sat for eight games with a left shoulder injury.

Adam Rubin of ESPN NY writes that according to Terry Collins, despite Campbell’s success in the every day lineup,  he will return mostly to a pinch-hitting role with Wright back.  He may be able to crack the lineup at first base when the Mets face left handed pitching.

“He’s probably more of a bench guy right now,” Collins tells ESPN. “That’s what he came here to do. Those guys, when you need them when someone goes down for a period of time, they step up. And he stepped up. He’s done an outstanding job of doing that. And what we need right now is for him to come off the bench at certain times in a game and get a big hit. And it helps out when you get some consistent playing time like he did.”

Campbell is currently batting .340/.379/.457 in 94 at bats so far this season and even if his role is diminished to only pinch hitting duties, he at least becomes a value to the Mets bench in later innings, something they desperately need.
