After Baseball America published their Top 10 list of Mets prospects, Matt Eddy answered questions about the list and other Mets prospects.
Compilation of the List
Eddy explained he believed everyone on the list from Amed Rosario (#1) to Gabriel Ynoa (#9) was fairly interchangeable, which would arguably mean Dominic Smith (#2) could have flipped spaces with Gavin Cecchini (#7) despite Smith starting to develop power and Cecchini likely needing a position change.
Eddy also explained he expects Andres Gimenez may soon crack the Top 10 list. However, he did not provide an explanation as to why Gimenez was left off the list despite his having a strong start to his professional career.
Thoughts on the Pitching Prospects
Eddy believes that when Baseball America’s Top 100 is published Justin Dunn and Thomas Szapucki will have a legitimate chance to be there. With respect to Szapucki, Eddy believes he could become a front-line starter once he reaches the major leagues.
Eddy is also a believer in first round pick Adam Kay, who had Tommy John surgery and did not pitch in the minor leagues in 2016. Even with the surgery, Eddy still considered Kay for the Top 10. Without the surgery, Eddy would have put Kay in the Top 10 presumably at the expense of Tomas Nido.
Eddy is high on Josh Smoker believing Smoker can be a contender for the back end of the bullpen due to his high strikeout numbers.
Speaking of the bullpen, Eddy believes Marcos Molina, who the Mets recently protected from the Rule 5 Draft by adding him to the 40 man roster, will ultimately wind up in the bullpen.
Thoughts on the Shortstop Prospects
Due to the surgery to repair his torn labrum, Eddy believes Luis Carpio will have to move from shorstop to second base. In Eddy’s opinion, Carpio already had a weak arm, and this surgery will prevent him from playing on the left side of the infield.
Colby Woodmansee will be ranked among the Mets Top 30 prospects by Baseball America, but Eddy warns that Woodmansee’s future in the Mets farm system is tenuous at best due to his poor finish for the Brooklyn Cyclones and the sheer depth of shortstop prospects in the Mets farm system.
Lastly, Eddy believes Phillip Evans will be selected in the Rule 5 Draft.
Overall, Eddy discussed a variety of topics including the standard Tim Tebow questions, the power potential of Peter Alonso, how many Mets may make the Baseball America Top 100 list, and which prospects the Mets may lose in the Rule 5 Draft. Ultimately, it appears Eddy believes the Mets have extraordinary depth at shortstop, and they have a number of pitchers who will ultimately be top of the line starting pitchers.
Based upon his comments, it will be interesting to see how different the Top 10 prospects will look in 2017. Assuredly, it is due for a significant change as it is likely that Robert Gsellman and Brandon Nimmo will no longer be considered prospect.
Any explanation on Becerra out of top 10?
I like the optimism on Kay but he’s not a high school arm losing a year he’s a college guy.
So he’ll not only be ‘older’ when he does finally make debut but really needs to rushed as well, all while coming back from TJS
I commented about this on the Top 10 Prospects article, but one thing that really annoyed me was that in one question about Ali Sanchez, Eddy said that Sanchez has “no secondary skills.” He’s only the best defensive catcher in our entire system and I thought that deserved a mention, instead of just claiming that he hit .216. Also, it would’ve been nice for Eddy to note that he was playing injured for much of the year.

But the book on him when he was drafted is that he could move quickly.
They actually listed Nido as the best defensive catcher in the system. That struck me as odd as well.
He had a good year contact wise but the power just evaporated, mostly due to this shoulder injury. We had better prospects at higher levels performing, so naturally him being outside of the top 10 speaks loads to the depth of our system.
A little off topic but Michael did the Mets have any pitching prospects in the DSL with a lot of upside last year? I have an idea about the position players like Gimenez, Guerrero, Valdez, Baracierta, and Santana but hadn’t heard much about any pitchers down there?
Do you see Kay as a reliever or a starter. And if a starter. What would his cieling be 2,3 starter?
