Last week Keith Law of ESPN made all New York Mets fans happy when he put five of their prospects in his Top 100 list. The week before he delighted and even surprised some fans by ranking the Mets farm system 7th in baseball.

Today, Law released his Top 10 prospects by position with the Mets having five players in the rankings and here they are:

Catcher: Tomas Nido (8th) – Law noted that the catcher position is weak right now in regards to high end catching prospects. Regardless, it’s nice to see the 22-year old Nido getting some national recognition after a breakout season in 2016. Nido slashed .320/.357/.459 on his way to the Florida State League batting title for the St. Lucie Mets. He also improved defensively in many facets and jumped into our MMO Top 30 Prospect rankings where he ranked 10th.

First Base: Dominic Smith (3rd) – Law ranked Smith as his 29th overall prospect for the second straight year. The 21-year old Smith hit .302/.367/.457 with a career high 14 home runs and 91 RBI in 2016. Law also mentions in the article that if he had kept going on the list that Mets prospect Peter Alonso could be someone included.

Second Base: Gavin Cecchini (4th) – This is the biggest surprise on the list considering Cecchini has played three regular season games at the position. However, with Amed Rosario ready for Triple-A and Cecchini’s defensive struggles at shortstop, second base is the obvious landing spot for the 23-year old. Cecchini hit .325/.390/.448 for the Las Vegas 51s in 2016 and went 2 for 6 with two doubles in the majors.

Shortstop: Amed Rosario (2nd) – The 21-year old shortstop isn’t just the Mets top prospect, he’s one of the best in all of baseball and Law ranked him 3rd overall while MLB Pipeline had him 5th. Rosario had a breakout offesnive season in 2016 when he hit .324/.374/.459 and set career highs in doubles (24), triples (13) and home runs (5).

Left-Handed Pitcher: Thomas Szapucki (6th) – Another helium pick from Law that saw the 20-year old starter rank 60th overall in his Top 100. Szapucki struck out a ridiculous 86 batters in 52 innings this past season and allowed only 26 hits during that span.

Mets right-handed pitching prospects Robert Gsellman (76th overall) and Justin Dunn (84th overall) made Law’s Top 100 list but were not in the Top 10 at the position.
