The growing trend among Top 100 prospect lists has been to have Peter Alonso ranked higher than Andres Gimenez. There has also been increased attention given to Mark Vientos and Ronny Mauricio. These trends were certainly reflected in Fangraphs Top 100 prospect rankings:

Peter Alonso, 1B
Rank:
48
Tool Grades: Hit (45/50), Raw Power (80/80), Game Power (55/70), Run (30/30), Fielding (40/40), Throw (50/50)
Analysis: “Alonso has elite raw power and lead the minors in homers last year. He is not a good defensive first baseman and may be the primary beneficiary if the universal DH is instituted.”

Andres Gimenez, SS
Rank:
52
Tool Grades: Hit (45/55), Raw Power (40/45), Game Power (30/45), Run (60/55), Fielding (50/55), Throw (55/55)
Analysis: “More skilled and polished than he is toolsy, Gimenez has been pushed up the minor league ladder aggressively and performed. He perceived ceiling is not that high.”

Ronny Mauricio, SS
Rank:
68
Tool Grades: Hit (20/50), Raw Power (45/55), Game Power (20/50), Run (45/50), Fielding (40/50), Throw (55/60)
Analysis: “This is what Fernando Tatis, Jr. looked like at age 17.”

Mark Vientos, 3B
Rank:
92
Tool Grades: Hit (25/55), Raw Power (60/70), Game Power (40/55), Run (40/35), Fielding (35/45), Throw (55/65)
Analysis: “Vientos is a third base, power projection bat who had a loud statistical 2018.”

While Mets fans have become excited at the prospect of seeing Alonso hitting towering home runs at Citi Field next year, perhaps the most exciting thing about these rankings is Fangraphs’ analysis of Mauricio. If Mauricio is as good as Fangraphs projects him to be, the Mets have a really special player on their hands.

To put it is perspective, Fangraphs analysis of Tatis was, “Tatis still has a chance to turn into some version of Manny Machado, but opinions differ on how much we should be concerned about his contact ability.” In the end, if you have any version of Machado in your organization, the future is bright even with the team having trading away Fangraphs 84th (Jarred Kelenic) and 89th (Justin Dunn) best prospects.
