MLB Pipeline has released their updated Rookie of the Year Power Rankings. For the first time this season, Francisco Álvarez has been ranked.

It should be noted the Power Rankings are not split up per league. It is a staff vote on which players are likeliest to take home the award. Voting is predicated on a mix of current performance and expectations for the rest of the season.

Currently, Álvarez is ranked second behind Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Corbin Carroll. In ranking him second, MLB Pipeline said:

Alvarez scuffled a bit upon being promoted, but he has found the tool that has been his calling card throughout his career: power. Alvarez is just mashing over the past few weeks, with seven homers in 15 games. That gives him eight on the season and a robust .558 slugging percentage. That’s pretty good for anybody, never mind a 21-year-old catcher.

At the moment, Álvarez has a 134 wRC+. That’s third among MLB catchers. It’s also eighth among rookies. His 1.3 fWAR is tied for fifth.

Notably, Álvaraz made a big push in May. During the month, Álvarez was tied for first for the top fWAR among MLB catchers. It was tied for the ninth most overall and tops among National League rookies.

Álvaraz was not the only Mets player to make the rankings. Right-handed pitcher Kodai Senga dropped a spot and is now tied for eighth in the rankings. In ranking Senga eighth, MLB Pipeline said:

Senga, who of course broke camp in the Mets’ rotation, continues to be a bit up and down, but effective overall. He was brilliant in striking out 12 Rays on May 17, but that was sandwiched by a pair of much shakier starts. Unlike Bradley or Miller, his walk rate remains distressingly high, but like them he has a secure rotation spot on a postseason contender.

Álvarez and Senga join Brett Baty as rookies who have big roles to play on this Mets team. While Baty is not ranked, as we see with Álvarez, he may just be one big month away from putting his name into the conversation.
