Gant Earns 9th Win, Fans 10 And Leads Savannah To Victory

Game one of the three game series between the Savannah Sand Gnats and the Augusta GreenJackets was played Monday evening in front of 2,669 fans at Grayson Stadium.

Savannah  beat Augusta 6-1 to win their 11th game in a row.

Savannah starter, John Gant, was sharp with excellent control. He pitched eight innings allowed only a run on five hits, struck out 10 and did not walk a batter. Gant improved his record to 9-4 with the win and lowered his ERA to 2.64.

Augusta scored their only run in the 1st inning when lead off batter Chris Lofton singled, stole second and scored on a single by Tyler Horan.

In the 4th inning, Savannah scored their three runs when Yeixon Ruiz walked, Dominic Smith singled and Matt Oberste doubled to drive in Ruiz. Two runs scored when Jorge Rivero reached base on a fielders choice and a throwing error by GreenJackets second baseman, Jeremy Sy.

Savannah scored three more runs in the 8th inning. Both Smith and Oberste reached base on singles, Cole Frenzel was intentionally walked to load the bases, and Rivero singled to drive in Smith.

Victor Cruzado then walked scoring Oberste and a ground out by Stefan Sabol scored Frenzel.

Sand Gnats had nine hits for the game. Oberste was 3-for-4 with an RBI and he improved his batting average to .319. Smith was 2-for-4 with 2 runs scored and raised his average to .296.

Pitching the 9th inning for Savannah, Paul Paez, walked two batters and gave up one hit.

Game two of the series starts at 11:05 am today at Grayson Stadium.
