Last year, the Mets signed Cuban outfielder/third baseman Gerson Molina as an International Free Agent. He played for Ciego de Avila from the 2012-2013 to the 2016-2017 seasons. Over the four years, he would play just 66 games hitting .231/.333/.231.

Like with many players, there was not much known about him, but he did have an interview with Ciber Cuba when he signed his deal with the Mets. The outlet described Molina as a tall, athletic player who makes good contact at the plate and will flash occasional power.

Yesterday, Molina would play his first game since he left Cuba in 2016. In the game, we would get to see Molina’s athleticism and potential at the plate. It wouldn’t take long either as he would hit a two RBI double.

Molina would show himself to be a little clutch with an RBI single in the ninth inning to pull the Fireflies to within two runs. Overall, Molina was 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI.

Molina would show some signs of rust with a caught stealing and getting picked off. Even with the rust, Molina was obviously good at the plate, and he played well in center. He exhibited the tools which led the Mets to give him a $175,000 signing bonus. Mostly, after not having played in three years, he’s now just a 23 year old prospect, who is off to a promising start in his career.
