The Mets claimed infielder Gosuke Katoh off waivers from the Blue Jays and assigned him to Triple-A Syracuse, the team announced Saturday.

Katoh, 27, was originally drafted by the Yankees in the second round of the 2013 draft.

As Michael Mayer pointed out, current Mets general manager Billy Eppler was in the Yankees’ front office at the time.

Katoh didn’t make his MLB debut until this season with the Blue Jays. In his extremely brief major league career, he’s gone 1-for-7 with three walks and one strikeout.

He put up a great campaign in Triple-A El Paso last year for the Padres organization. He batted .306/.388/.474 in 114 games. He played all around the field, including first base, second base, third base, left field and right field. He’s primarily been a second baseman throughout his minor league career, though he has a solid amount of experience at third and short as well.

Katoh gives the Mets an extra infield depth piece, which the team was sorely lacking. Wyatt Young and Daniel Palka have been hitting well in Syracuse, but they didn’t have much beyond that.

Second basemen Travis Blankenhorn (.606 OPS) and Cody Bohanek (.474 OPS) are struggling at the plate. Notably, Katoh has primarily been a second baseman in his professional career.

Third base prospect Mark Vientos isn’t ready for the majors yet, as he’s hitting just .167/.282/.303 with the Syracuse Mets. Katoh strengthens a Syracuse team that’s gone 9-18 and gives the major league club an option to go in the event of injury.

Katoh also brings some energy and lightheartedness to the organization, judging by the recent video he tweeted about Robbie Ray‘s pants.

With Robinson Canó recently having been designated for assignment, there was an open spot on the 40 man roster. As such, the Mets do not need to make a corresponding roster move.
