The New York Mets have announced Grant Hartwig has been promoted from Triple-A Syracuse. He has been assigned the number 93.

Hartwig, 25, was signed by the Mets as an undrafted free agent out of Miami University of Ohio. Hartwig eschewed medical school for a chance to fulfill his dreams of being a major leaguer.

In 21 games for Syracuse, Hartwig is 3-2 with three saves, a 4.21 ERA, 1.636 WHIP, 5.3 BB/9, and a 12.3 K/9. Entering this season, MMN rated him as the 26th best prospect in the Mets farm system.

During spring training, Hartwig was able to throw his fastball 97 MPH. Generally, he throws his fastball in the mid 90s with a hard slider while mixing in a change-up.

Hartwig has been working to develop two pitches. He has been working on a cutter. He’s worked East-West with his slider, and he’s been developing to make it more like a sweeper, which has become an en vogue pitch.

Additionally, Hartwig has been working on throwing his sinker/fastball up in the zone.

Hartwig will take the place of John Curtiss on the roster. Curtiss, 30, was optioned to Syracuse after throwing 32 pitches over 2 2/3 innings in the series finale against the St. Louis Cardinals.

There was no accompanying 40 man roster move required to add Hartwig to the roster.

Curtiss has made 13 appearances for the Mets this season not registering a decision. He has posted a 4.08 ERA, 1.132 WHIP, 3.1 BB/9, and a 5.6 K/9.

In nine appearances for Syracuse, Curtiss is 0-2 with a 6.57 ERA, 1.459 WHIP, 4.4 BB/9, and a 10.9 K/9.

This marks the third time this season Curtiss has been optioned to Triple-A. This is the last season Curtiss has a minor league option.
