Gregory Guerrero was once considered one of the top prospects in the Mets farm system. He had the bloodlines with his being the nephew of former Major Leauguers Vladimir Guerrero and Wilton Guerrero. He also had the talent.

When he signed as an International Free Agent in 2015, Ben Badler of Baseball America rated him as the sixth best prospect. He was a young prospect with enviable tools. He had a powerful arm, and he had power at the plate.

The problem was it never quite translated to success. Part of the reason why is he had shoulder injuries. He’d finally undergo surgery, and it would cost him the entirety of the 2018 season.

Guerrero has returned from shoulder surgery, and he’s been assigned to Kingsport. So far through four games, the now second baseman suddenly looks like the prospect the Mets believed him to be.

Guerrero has now homered in consecutive games, and he has two straight multiple hit games. Overall on the season,Guerrero is 5-for-18 with a triple, two homers, and four RBI. That’s a .313/.389/.813 batting line.

While it’s too soon to pass judgments, Guerrero is looking like a top prospect in the Mets farm system again. The tools were always present to have a breakout season like this may be. If he’s fully recovered from his shoulder surgery, he could be even better than what he’s shown so far this season.
