The New York Mets have upgraded their pitching rotation by obtaining Chris Bassitt from the Oakland Athletics. To obtain Bassitt, the Mets parted with top prospects J.T. Ginn and Adam Oller.

Ginn, 22, was the Mets 2020 second round draft pick from Mississippi State University. He was slated to be MMN’s sixth ranked prospect.

Ginn made 18 starts pitching 92.0 innings between St. Lucie and Brooklyn last season. He was 5-5 with a 3.03 ERA, 1.054 WHIP, 2.2 BB/9, and a 7.9 K/9.

This was Ginn’s first season post Tommy John with his opting for the surgery in the year he was drafted. Last season, we saw him hit 95 MPH while snapping a two plane change.

With Ginn being traded, the Mets have traded away yet another high draft pick. At the time of this trade, the Mets traded away their top two picks of the 2020 draft.

Oller, 27, was selected by the Mets in the minor league portion of the minor league portion of the Rule 5 draft. He went on to be the Mets minor league pitcher of the year, and he was rated by MMN as the organization’s 17th best prospect.

Oller made 23 starts between Binghamton and Syracuse pitching 120.0 innings. He would go 9-4 with a 3.45 ERA, 1.167 WHIP, 3.5 BB/9, and a 10.4 K/9. He was slated to return to Triple-A Syracuse to begin the 2022 season.

Oller has a low 90s fastball which plays up due to his unique delivery. He also uses a slider to generate a number of swings and misses.

Oller was added to the Mets 40 man roster to protect him from the Rule 5 draft. With his being traded, there is no corresponding move required to add Bassitt to the roster.
