Jayce Boyd’s Turnaround

Jayce Boyd was floundering.  His first month playing Double-A baseball had to have Mets fans wondering if the daunting jump from Class-A to the Double-A level, that derails the careers of many prospects, Might gobble up Boys too.  After Boyd went 0-for-2 in a B-Met’s 9-3 loss on May 3rd, his batting average had shrunk to a measly .169.

Then Boyd caught fire.  Boyd got two hits the following night, went hitless on May 5th, then exploded with a 4-for-4 night in New Hampshire on May 6th.  He has been off and running ever since, stretching as high as .270 after a two-hit outing on June 10th.

As of yet, Boyd has not hit for much power.  The first baseman/designated hitter, has 10 doubles, three home runs and 17 RBI.  But, first things first.  Priority number one for Boyd was to start making contact consistently at the plate.  A goal he’s accomplished over the last month.  If he can continue that consistency, Boyd can now work on driving the ball with more power.

As the season progresses, Boyd is showing increased discipline at the plate.  His 23 walks ranks third highest on Binghamton behind Matt Reynolds (27), and Brian Burgamy (26).  The walks boost Boyd’s on-base percentage to .355.

It’s no surprise that Boyd’s bat finally got hot.  He has a reputation as an accomplished hitter wherever he has played.  In his final year at Florida in 2012, he led the ACC in hits with 96.  Boyd was also in the top ten in several ACC batting categories; batting average, doubles, runs batted in, total bases, and on-base percentage.

Boyd shared time between Savannah and St. Lucie in his first full year of professional baseball, batting a combined .330 with a .410 OBP and an OPS of .871.

Multiple roster changes and a tight Eastern League Eastern Division race, make Boyd’s hot bat good news for the B-Mets as they battle to secure a playoff spot for the second season in a row.
