After originally insisting he was only a second baseman, the New York Mets have finally called-up Jeff McNeil to the Major Leagues.

In confirming Rich MacLeod’s initial report, Joel Sherman of the New York Post notes with the Mets not yet trading Asdrubal Cabrera, it is anticipated McNeil could get playing time at third base over Jose Reyes.

This year, McNeil was the Opening Day third baseman for the Binghamton Rumble Ponies, and in his professional career, he has played third in 151 games, the most at any position other than second base (213). Over the past few weeks, McNeil has been working with Tony DeFrancesco to improve not just at third base, but also other positions like left field.

While he’s versatile, McNeil has forced this promotion due to his bat. In 88 games between Binghamton and Las Vegas, McNeil is hitting .342/.411/.617 with 26 doubles, five triples, 19 homers, and 71 RBI.

As noted, Cabrera has not yet been traded meaning there is still a need for a corresponding move. With Yoenis Cespedes‘ heel issues, it is possible he is placed back on the disabled list. Other candidates include Matt den Dekker and Ty Kelly, both of whom would have to be designated for assignment.
