It was an up-and-down day for the Mets affiliates on Thursday, but the Brooklyn Cyclones received some bad news. The #22 prospect on the MMO top 35 list, RHP Calvin Ziegler, suffered a torn UCL and will undergo Tommy John surgery. This will put him out for all of the 2024 season and probably half of the 2025 season. Ziegler was hoping to rebound from an almost entirely missed 2023 season that saw him throw one inning.

Triple-A

Syracuse Mets (9-8) 4, Charlotte Knights (7-11) 5

BOX SCORE

The Syracuse offense only had six hits on the day, with Mark Vientos being the only position player to have more than one hit.

Luisangel Acuña continues to struggle with the bat, but when he gets on base continues to steal, taking a base today and getting caught as well.

  • LHP Joey Lucchesi (2.57) 6 IP, 3 R (2 ER), 4 H, 3 BB, 4 K, 1 HR allowed (58 of 93 pitches for strikes)
  • RHP Sean Reid-Foley (0.00) 1 IP, 1 H, 1 R (unearned)(9 of 11 pitches for strikes)
  • RHP Dedniel Nunez (0.00) 1 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 3 K (14 of 22 pitches for strikes)
  • RHP Yacksel Rios (4.05) 0 IP, 1 ER, 1 H, 1 BB (3 of 7 pitches for strikes)

Joey Lucchesi had a very strong outing, but two Syracuse errors plagued both he and Sean Reid-Foley, who is on a rehab assignment. Dedniel Nunez continued his strong showing in Syracuse, and Yacksel Rios was the tough-luck loser, allowing a walk-off double that sealed the game.

Double-A

Game 1: Binghamton Rumble Ponies (5-5) 4, Reading Fightin Phils (3-8) 3, 8 Innings

BOX SCORE

The Rumble Ponies offense only mustered six hits on the day, but on top of six walks, turned it into a victory. Brandon McIlwain came in as a pinch-hitter in the eighth inning and hit an RBI single to give Binghamton the lead.

  • RHP Tyler Stuart (4.66) 5 IP, 2 ER, 6 H, 2 BB, 4 K, 1 HR allowed (58 of 85 pitches for strikes)
  • LHP Daniel Juarez (4.50) 1 IP, 1 ER, 1 H, 1 HR allowed (10 of 15 pitches for strikes)
  • RHP Paul Gervase (1.69) 2 IP, 3 K (19 of 26 pitches for strikes)

Binghamton’s pitching was stellar on Thursday, with Tyler Stuart having a solid outing. The bullpen held up until the go-ahead hit, and Paul Gervase sealed the game with two stellar innings.

Game 2: Binghamton Rumble Ponies (5-5) 4, Reading Fightin Phils (3-8) 7, 8 Innings

BOX SCORE

  • DH Kevin Parada 0-for-4, K (.713 OPS)
  • RF Rylan Thomas 3-for-4, 2B, R, SB (4), K (.915 OPS)
  • CF Alex Ramirez 1-for-4, 2 RBI (6) 2 K (.809 OPS)

The Rumble Ponies scratched across four runs on eight hits, but only five players got a hit. Alex Ramirez continues to show some signs of life at the plate, despite striking out twice.

  • RHP Troy Miller (4.09) 4 IP, 3 H 5 K, 1 HR allowed (38 of 56 pitches for strikes)
  • RHP David Griffin (4.50) 2 IP, 1 ER, 2 H, 3 K(20 of 29 pitches for strikes)
  • RHP Carlos Guzman (13.50) 1 IP, 3 R (2 ER), 2 H, 1 K (12 of 21 pitches for strikes)
  • RHP Hunter Parsons (6.75) 2/3 IP, 2 H, 3 R (2 ER), 1 BB, 1 K (17 of 31 pitches for strikes)
  • RHP Nolan Clenney (0.00) 1/3 IP (2 of 4 pitches for strikes)

Troy Miller had a good start, but the bullpen was foiled by an error by Wyatt Young and a wild pitch by Carlos Guzman. Allowing two earned runs is not how you want to lose a three-run game.

High-A

BOX SCORE

Jersey Shore BlueClaws (7-5) 4, Brooklyn Cyclones (5-7) 6

The Cyclones managed six runs on nine hits and nine walks. Timely hitting was the name of the game today, with only one extra-base hit. Wilfredo Lara had two errors on the day, including one on an infield fly rule that led to the tying run in the bottom of the 7th inning.

  • RHP Noah Hall (10.61) 5 IP, 1 ER, 4 H, 2 BB, 3 K (37 of 64 pitches for strikes)
  • RHP Douglas Orellana (2.16) 1 1/3 IP, 3 R (2 ER) 3 BB, 4 K (24 of 45 pitches for strikes)
  • RHP Joshua Cornielly (1.80) 1 2/3 IP, 3 K (21 of 33 pitches for strikes)
  • RHP Justin Lawson (0.00) 1 IP, 1 K (7 of 8 pitches for strikes)

The pitching was strong on Thursday, with Noah Hall having a strong start after his first two were less than ideal. The bullpen held up when it mattered, with Joshua Cornielly and Justin Lawson earning the win and the save, respectively.

Low-A

St. Lucie Mets (4-8) 5, Tampa Tarpons (4-8) 9

BOX SCORE

Offensively, St. Lucie was quiet, scoring five runs on four hits. The lineup was missing Jesus Baez and Christopher Suero.

  • RHP Wyatt Hudepohl (4.70) 3 IP, 2 ER, 5 H, 3 BB, 3 K (37 of 66 pitches for strikes)
  • RHP Layonel Ovalles (8.59) 2 1/3 IP, 5 ER, 3 H, 2 BB, 2 K (27 of 55 pitches for strikes)
  • RHP Alan Perdomo (5.40) 1 2/3 IP, 2 ER, 2 BB, 1 K (20 of 38 pitches for strikes)
  • LHP Ryan Ammons (2.70) 2 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 3 K, (23 of 37 pitches for strikes)

Regardless of what St. Lucie did pitching-wise – they were victimized on the basepaths by the Tarpons, allowing eight stolen bases without one being caught. Wyatt Hudepohl was not sharp today, and everyone after him walked at least two batters.
