Tim Healey of Newsday reports the New York Mets have hired Jonathan Armold as their new minor league pitching coordinator. Armold, 32, “spent the previous five-plus years with the Rangers, including three years as the pitching coordinator.”

As noted by Mathew Brownstein of MMO, Armold replaces Ricky Meinhold. Meinhold had left the organization after the 2021 season to pursue other professional opportunities.

Armold has extensive coaching experience beginning in September 2012 when he was a volunteer assistant coach at Flagler College. His other stops include being a scout with the Milwaukee Brewers as well as the University of Texas pitching coach.

In his past role, he served as as the pitching coordinator for the Texas Rangers organization. Armold detailed his responsibilities in his LinkedIn profile:

Established and oversaw organizational metrics and dashboard tools to evaluate performance and facilitate improvement. Collaborated with analysts and front office staff to provide feedback, develop tools, and improve flow of information across the organization. Introduced new technologies and processes to utilize them within daily operations, educating coaches, staff, and players in data and technology to aid player development in the process.

In many ways, Armold is another step forward in taking a more analytical approach in player development. It’s also a step forward with creating personalized plans for player development.
