I don’t agree with it at all — but yeah, that’s what Keith Law had to say during his usual fan chat yesterday when asked about him. Here are some questions and answers concerning the Mets…

My thoughts on the matter…
- We’re on the same page about Jayce Boyd. I like him as a player now but I do think his success is a result of the fact that he’s a little old for his league right now.
- I’m not sure what he has against Cesar Puello. Puello’s breakout season has been commended and respected by many, and yet he still feels he’s an extra outfielder? Sorry, but we disagree here at MMN. For the record, his comment was relating to seeing Puello at the EL AS game.
- I’m willing to give Wilmer Flores a little more hope than Law has, as well. Flores is coming off an awesome game last night where he banged out four hits, including two home runs.
- Seriously with that Josh Satin comment? Make sure to deck me in the face if I ever make comments along those lines about any one of our minor league players. I can’t lie about the fact that I am a little bothered by that statement…

Satish – no truer words have ever been said.
but, when a player has made it, has anyone ever really said, “oh my giddy-odd, that Keith Law guy was righter than every other scout in the MLB!”
no. He’s a writer, with ESPN, and they all love the Phillies, which is why every other month they tell everyone to “watch out for them”
rant over.
Keith Law is, was, and will always be an imbecile. Why take him seriously?
lmfao….A glorified nerd from the Ivy League brotherhood. No one should take what he says seriously. It’s amazing how MLB has allowed nerds and their laptops invade a sport’s middle management. It’s really incredible…SMH
I don’t see the point in killing a guy for being honest. It’s his job to evaluate players. What’s he supposed to do, paint a rosy picture for every player?
Just because you don’t agree doesn’t make someone an “imbecile”.
And as for the comment about ESPN loving the Phillies, Law grew up in Long Island as a Yankees fan.
This made me feel much smarter than Keith Law. Awesome.
Sadly: Keith Law doesn’t really know alot about baseball.
Kirk, I have no issue with him being honest. But he didn’t give any kind of explanation or reason why he he felt that way about Puello. He made a claim and he didn’t back it up with anything.
He did the same thing with Satin too. It just comes across like he has an anti Met agenda or something because he discredits them without explaining why.
I understand your point, but if you follow his chats you’d understand why he doesn’t go too in depth. He’s getting thousands of questions fired at him and he’s trying to answer as many as possible.
He’s not anti-Met. He’s just blunt. Which may come across as smug or arrogant at times, but any fan of his knows he’s not that way at all.
The thing is– we all want to think our prospects are all going to be great players. Most of the time it’s not going to be the case. If you end up with 5 major-leaguers out of your top 10 prospects, that’s really really good.
The guy who asked the question about Flores made an excellent point, and I just want to expand on that a little.
The average prospect in the PCL is 26 years old, and averages a .272/.344/.422 slash line.
Wilmer Flores is 21 years old and he is hitting .325 /361/.537
By the way, there are only 3 players in that league that are under 22 years old, and Flores is one of them.
While Vegas is a great hitters park, it really isn’t drastically more hitter friendly than the rest of the PCL. The whole league gives an advantage to hitters, not just Vegas. But the fact that Flores is one of the youngest players in the league, and is one of the top hitters in the league shows how extremely talented he is.
I understand the reality that most prospects in general aren’t going to amount to anything significant. However, I think if your going to dismiss a prospect, you should at least provide some reason why you feel that way.
Even though I don’t agree with him about Flores, he at least made actual points about him. He didn’t do that with Puello though.
I don’t see anything wrong with his comments on Flores whatsoever. He said he’s not a “great” prospect. I agree. Flores is a good prospect. I like him a lot. But he’s a below average defender wherever you put him. It’s hard to be a great prospect without a true position.
You’re right, I would have liked to know his reasons for his comments on Puello. I just don’t see a reason to tear a guy down because he didn’t give them though. Maybe since his opinion of him is low, he doesn’t feel the need to give a full scouting report on a guy he sees as a non-prospect.
I didn’t say he said anything wrong about Flores. I just have a different opinion about him. There’s not anything wrong with having a difference of opinion about a prospect.
Yeah, Law proved he doesn’t know how to scout talent. Never judge a person because of what he did in an all star game first of all. Calling Satin a terrible baseball player makes him sound like an idiot!! Do you know how hard it is to make it to the majors mr law?? Satin has proved on every level he has played that he is a solid baseball player! The Satin comment really pissed me off! No one wants to give Flores the respect he deserves! Not sure what its gonna take! He’s 21 years old and the best hitter in aaa! The kid is a natural hitter and will prove these people wrong very soon! Keep doubting our prospects! We will have the last laugh when we go back and read these professionals comments in a year or two! Look at what the said about Harvey for example! Who’s laughing now!?!?!
Thanks for pointing out Flores’ awesomeness form yet another angle. The only I’d add is that he’s very undervalued and under-respected in the industry. His highest value is to us. Industry wide, people still don’t think of him as a top 50 (a.k.a. elite level talent). The Mets themselves seem to be down on his glove and defensive position.
In true Bill Cosby form, I say all that to say this, the kid will be fine and should be all ours. His bat is special, but teams are underselling it, and we must not join that song. His glove is fine; it’s not gold glove level…but please there’s no way the kid is worse than Uggla or even Murphy was a year or so ago. And three, why are we fearing him eventually moving to 1B. That would mean he grew off 2B, and he grew into his power. If this kid can hit 30 homers as a .300 hitter, that’s elite level production…and on the cheap for a long time. Why are in a hurry to trade him again?
We’re not getting Stanton. We’re not getting Cargo. What we need to be going after are elite level close to MLB level OF prospects like Pederson, Castellanos, Soler, Almora, Liriano, or Polanco. Heck I’d even try to pry Marisnick from the Marlins (Me and everyone else like Yelich better…but he’s not going anywhere).
Flores is and should remain ours. You don’t trade potential .300 hitters with 30 plus home run power when they’re this close to the big leagues. You especially don’t trade hitting from a system bereft of elite hitting prospects. And please, please, don’t trade for overpaid MLB veterans. Ethier would cause us all to go nuts. But even Rios, who I like, I’d pass on for most of the kids I listed above.
The idea that the Tigers would be willing to deal Castellanos is ridiculous to me. If that’s true I would hand over Parnell in a second. Castellanos is a stud.
Aw shucks you beat me to it I think he is a blowhole!! and I guess time will tell about these guys
Isn’t Law the same guy who was orgasmic over F-Mart, thought Familia and Mejia were aces in waiting, thought Gee and Niese were not prospects, and thought Harvey would end up in the bullpen?
Nice thing about working for ESPN, you can be wrong more than right and you still get called an “expert” because you’re on tv
Keith Law is the same guy who said this about MIGUEL CABRERA last year before he won THE TRIPLE CROWN and MVP
===============
“One of the most popular questions I’ve gotten recently is whether Miguel Cabrera will win the AL MVP award. I don’t presume to know what the voters will do, but I know that as it stands right now, he shouldn’t appear in the top three spots on any ballot.
“Cabrera’s offensive performance has been solid, but he’s a major negative on defense at third base, so a player like Cano, a good defender at a position (second base) where offensive levels are lower, is more valuable overall even though Cabrera has slightly higher raw rate stats.
“Cabrera is the third-most valuable player on his own team, behind Verlander and Jackson, the latter of whom has completely transformed himself at the plate this year and is a plus defender in center.”
===============
NEED I SAY MORE?????
All you need to know about Keith Law is he is/was a SABR GUY whom happened to work for Baseball prospectus(a SABR prospect site)….and was hired by the bluejays by JP Ricciardi after Paul DepoDesta referred him.
So Mets fans be very afraid when draft time comes your GM’s 2 sidekicks felt this guy was a good baseball mind…He thought
well after seeing what he wrote about Josh Satin my mind is made up about law he’s a terrible writer and so called expert, HE KNOWS NOTHING!!
I think that if murphy can start hitting again before the trade deadline and becomes valuable again then we should try to package him with 1 or 2 of the kids and look for a ready to go all around outfielder and put Wilmer at 2nd let him grow up with the rest of the kids around David and it looks like aldersons 1st try at the draft is a bust so we need to find a good young outfielder
After seeing what our supposed great front office has done so far I AM VERY AFRAID if for some stupid reason they trade Parnell I swear I will not watch another game till they are all fired which shouldn’t be too long anyway after seeing what they have done so fa. Great job with the bullpen 2 years in a row and with the outfield, but we do have one of the cheapest teams in the league, take away Santana and Bay and I think our payroll would be right there in the bottom 1/3 of the league GREAT JOB GUYS!!!
Vinny I wouldnt put any stock into what Law says this is the same guy whom said Miggy Cabrera was the 3rd best player on his team last year behind Verlander and AUSTIN JACKSON!!!! He believes Austin Jackson is better than Miggy and Prince Fielder
Alderson will be dumpster diving again next season
