Keith Law of The Athletic has followed his Top 100 rankings with the top 20 prospects in each organization. With respect to the New York Mets, we were aware of his top five, as he included five Mets in his top 100.
Those five prospects were Francisco Alvarez, Ronny Mauricio, Brett Baty, Mark Vientos, and Alex Ramirez. Law’s entire Top 20 is as follows:
1. Francisco Álvarez, C
2. Ronny Mauricio, SS
3. Brett Baty, 3B
4. Mark Vientos, 3B
5. Alex Ramirez, OF
6. Matt Allan, RHP
7. J.T. Ginn, RHP
8. Khalil Lee, OF
9. Carlos Cortes, OF
10. Mike Vasil, RHP
11. Nick Plummer, OF
12. Dominic Hamel, RHP
13. Calvin Ziegler, RHP
14. Eric Orze, RHP
15. Jose Butto, RHP
16. Christian Scott, RHP
17. Robert Dominguez, RHP
18. Jaylen Palmer, OF
19. Junior Santos, RHP
20. JT Schwartz, 1B
One thing which should immediately stand out is the recent infusion of talent into the Mets farm system. Looking at this top 20, nine of the players joined the team since 2020.
This does speak to the lack of depth that was in the farm system. It also speaks to how much upside there is currently in the system.
On that note, Law identified Vasil as a sleeper candidate. To a certain degree, this should beg us to revisit the state of the depth of the system when the sleeper candidate is deemed a top 10 prospect.
Law further notes these prospects are not in a position to truly have a Major League impact in 2022. Part of the reason is how far away many of them are, and, of course, the fact the Mets Major League roster has players blocking these and other minor leaguers.
We have so far seen MMN already rank many of these prospects in their top 30. Notably, Orze (20), Santos (22), Dominguez (24), Vasil (28), and Schwartz (30) have already appeared in the rankings which are still in the process of being released.
