Las Vegas Names 2018 Award Winners

For the final time as the Triple-A affiliate of the New York Mets, the Las Vegas 51s have announced their 2018 award winners:

Mayor’s Trophy – Peter Alonso

The Mayor’s Trophy is given to the 51s best player as determined by the fans.

Through his first 63 games with Vegas, Alonso is hitting .246/.348/.550 with 17 doubles, a triple, 18 homers, and 61 RBI.  Overall, in his time between Vegas and Binghamton, Alonso is hitting .278/.393/.561 with 29 doubles, a triple, 33 homers, and 113 RBI.

Previous winners of this award include Wilmer Flores, Matt den Dekker, Travis Taijeron, T.J. Rivera, and Amed Rosario.

Most Valuable Player – Zach Borenstein

The two most valuable awards are determined by votes from the 51s coaching staff with this year’s Most Valuable Player going to the team’s kind representative in the All Star Game.

Borenstein leads the Pacific Coast League in run scored (89) and walks (79) .  He is also in the top 10 in doubles, homers, RBI, and total bases (270).

So far this season, Borenstein is hitting .248/.357/.472 with 30 doubles, two triples, 24 homers, and 86 RBI.

Previous winners of this award include Dominic SmithBrandon Nimmo, and Andrew Brown.

Most Valuable Pitcher – Drew Gagnon

Gagnon made 26 starts this season for Vegas going 6-6 with a 4.74 ERA, 1.240 WHIP, and a 5.8 K/9.  Gagnon had pitched so well this season, he made his Major League debut after pitching in the minors for eight seasons.

Gagnon is the league leader in games started, complete games, and shutouts.  He is second in the league in innings pitched and WHIP.

Previous winners of this award include Steven Matz, Gabriel Ynoa, and Logan Verrett.

Community Service Award – Jeremy Accardo, Jeff Glenn, Colton Plaia

The winners of the Community Service Award is determined by the front office.  As reported by MiLB.com, Plaia was given the award due to his participation in ” various charity functions, school events, autograph sessions and pre-game events throughout the season.”

Previous winners of this award include Jayce Boyd, Chasen Bradford, and Nimmo.
