Cuban phenom Lazaro “Lazarito” Armenteros received clearance yesterday by Major League Baseball making him eligible to sign according to Jesse Sanchez of MLB.com. He will become eligible on February 10th and is subject to international bonus pools.
Lazarito is 6 foot 2, 205 pounds and held a showcase at the San Diego Padres complex in the Dominican Republic on Friday. More than 150 scouts were on hand to watch the 16-year old corner infielder/outfielder show off his impressive combination of power and speed. Every MLB team had a group of scouts on hand including the Mets.
One scout I talked to compared his muscular body to that of Mike Cameron, saying he looked like he was in his 20’s. Another scout said he has rare talent with signs of Willie Mays and Bo Jackson according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today. Nightengale also says that there is already a Japanese team willing to pay Lazarito roughly $15 million to play in the Nippon League. That also means that the Yankees, Red Sox, Diamondbacks, Rays, and Angels will likely not be able to sign him.
Here is a highlight reel that Baseball America put together of Lazarito showing off some of his skills during international play.
Edit By Teddy Klein:
In addition to Lazaro Armenteros being eligible, 20 year old speedy infielder/outfielder Randy Arozarena was also cleared to be signed according to Baseball America’s Ben Badler. Showcased as a Shortstop, Arozarena has also played in the outfield, and could be a capable center fielder with more experience. He is also a potential top of the order hitter, who could be capable of hitting 10-15 home runs with a pretty sound swing.

He ranked #9 in Baseball America’s top 20 Cuban Players in Cuba back in April. He is also subject to the International Bonus Pool limits just like Lazarito because he is younger than 23 years old.

Dodgers, Cubs, Giants, Royals, and Blue Jays already over limit this year.
which means they can still spend on Lazarito.
Yep I would put the Dodgers as the favorite, with Cubs and Giants at least making an offer
Might be a decent chance, lets not worry about $$$. That excuse is getting old. Did we not see a jump in revenue last year?
Is it wrong to assume that San Diego may have the inside track? Whenever I hear about a prospect working out in one team’s Dominican facility, I always assume there may be a verbal agreement in place. Not sure if that applies to Cuban defectors as well.
No, it does not. Tomas also worked out at the Padres facility.
Gotcha. Thanks
