Worth noting: Monday’s announcement of the 12 players suspended as part of the Biogenesis investigation could have sparked a major ripple effect through the Mets’ farm system. However, many of the rosters remained intact and St. Lucie did not lose another player due to a promotion. Instead, the Mets watched outfielder Cory Vaughn move back to Double-A Binghamton after completing his injury rehab in Florida to fill the vacancy created by Cesar Puello‘s suspension. Vaughn, who hit .205 in 12 games with the Mets, blocked a possible promotion for fellow outfielder Dustin Lawley. The 24-year-old continues to wait in St. Lucie despite leading the Florida State League with 23 home runs and 83 RBI along with a .266 batting average in 106 games.
Surging in the batter’s box: Second baseman T.J. Rivera. After hitting .275 during the month of July, Rivera has not slowed down in the early part of August. He has recorded a hit in the first four games, going 8-for-15 (.533) with a glossy .588 on-base percentage. He has maintained steady split numbers this season, posting a .287 average against right-handed pitchers and a .286 mark versus southpaws.
Surging on the mound: Starter Alex Panteliodis. If you overlook Panteliodis’ woeful outing on July 27 when he surrendered seven runs in two innings during a loss at Lakeland, he has served as the Mets’ top starter recently. The left-hander has held three of his past four opponents scoreless, including a shutout of Clearwater over 6.1 innings last Friday. During that four-game span, he has tallied at least three strikeouts (17 total) — the Lakeland matchup was the obvious exception — and just three walks.
Number to remember: 3. At the start of August, St. Lucie had four players on its disabled list, including slugger Aderlin Rodriguez for an undisclosed injury. But that number has been sliced tothree following the activation of outfielder Charley Thurber from the DL last Sunday. Thurber has not appeared in a game since July 7 and was hitting just .203 with five homers and 30 RBI before landing on the shelf. In addition to Rodriguez, the Mets are still without pitchers Luis Mateo and Taylor Whitenton.
Up next: Following a rare two-day break due to a cancelled game and a scheduled day off, St. Lucie returns to action Wednesday to open a three-game series at Bradenton. Domingo Tapia (2-7, 4.29) is scheduled to start the series opener against Robby Rowland (3-10, 5.42). The Mets return to Tradition Field on Saturday for a seven-game homestand that includes matchups against Palm Beach, Fort Myers and Jupiter.
