In his first start for the Class A Advanced St. Lucie Mets, Luis Cessa showed why the move to make him a pitcher rather than pursue a career as an infielder, was pure genius.

Cessa tossed six innings, giving up two runs on eight hits and striking out two batters. The Mets would eventually lose the game, but the young right hander took a step in the right direction and proved that his promotion to High A ball was a good move by the organization.

Cessa’s next start is slated for Monday at Tradition Field against Jupiter Hammerheads.

Luis Cessa, who was signed by the Mets as a non-draft international free agent in 2008, will make his first start of the season tonight when the St. Lucie Mets travel to Jupiter to play the Hammerheads.

In 2013 season, he played with the Savannah Sand Gnats and in 21 games started, he was 8-4, with a 3.12 ERA, and 124 strikeouts in 130 innings. He was also a part of the magical 2013 season in Savannah that brought the affiliate a South Atlantic League championship.

An infielder, who converted into a pitcher, Cessa has won 17 games in three minor league seasons and now he prepares to take on Florida State League hitters and continue with his progress through the minors.

It’s revving up to be another exciting season on the farm, and tonight another good young arm gets his turn to show why the Mets minor league system is one of the tops in the major leagues.
