Mets prospect Luis Guillorme will play for Team Spain in the European Championship that starts today in the Netherlands. The other 11 teams participating are the Netherlands, Germany, Czech Republic, Russia, Sweden, Great Britain, Italy, France, Belgium, Greece and Croatia.
Guillorme and the St. Lucie Mets just had their season end on Wednesday night in disappointing fashion as they lost two straight games to the Bradenton Marauders in the first round of the Florida State League playoffs. Guillorme is no stranger to global competition having played for Spain in the WBC qualifier in March.
The 21-year old shortstop started the season at second base to accommodate the Mets top prospect in Amed Rosario before sliding back over to his natural position in June. It was a disappointing offensive season for Guillorme who was coming off a SAL MVP but hit just .263/.332/.312. However, he did hit his first career triple and home run this year while holding onto a great 43 BB/63 K rate.
There are very few players currently affiliated with Major League teams or formerly pro players in the U.S. involved in the European Championship. However, Guillorme will be joined on the Spain team by former Mets prospects Fernando “The Teenage Hitting Machine” Martinez and Rhiner Cruz.
Roger Bernadina, who played entire season for the Las Vegas 51s, will play on the Netherlands squad who are considered the favorite in the tournament. The Dutch team will also have Shairon Martis, Loek Van Mil, Chadwick Tromp, Stijn van der Meer and Curt Smith who have all played in affiliated ball in their careers. Andruw Jones will also be the teams bench coach.
Former Mets minor leaguer Thomas De Wolf will be playing for the Belgium squad. The outfielder played three season in the Mets system reaching the GCL Mets in 2011.
You can see the full schedule of the tournament as well as the play-by-play for each game at BaseballStats.eu.
Ah, Fernando “The Teenage Hitting Machine” Martinez. Too bad he couldn’t hit once he got into his 20s. Oh well, not all prospects work out. Amazing that he’s still only 27.
Guillorme I’m still very high on, though. In my opinion, he’s the best fielding SS in the system (although Ramos is close), and although he has no power, I do like his approach at the plate. Not sure he’ll have much of place on the team in the future with Rosario and Cecchini already ahead of him and providing far more offensive value.
I was absolutely shocked when I saw that he was only 27 years old. His knees must be like 80 though.
Guillorme is an absolute vacuum with a glove.
Watching his ABs this year im still left wanting more aggression every time. Maybe he’s taken to mets hitting philosophy too much cuz he takes lots of pitches like first pitch meatballs.
And pretty much everything he hits fair or foul is oppo field.
Fernando just hit a three-run blast for Spain!
now has three hits and five RBI!
Had arthritis in his knees… poor guy. That’s like the worst luck a player can have.
