Mets shortstop prospect Luis Guillorme will play for Team Spain in the upcoming WBC qualifier that will take place March 17-20 according to a source. He will be playing against Dilson Herrera who we announced earlier today will be playing for Team Colombia. In fact they will match up against each other in the first game of the qualifier on March 17th at 2:00 p.m ET.
Luis is coming off a breakout season with the bat that saw him earn Most Valuable Player honors in the South Atlantic League for the Savannah Sand Gnats. The 21-year old hit .318/.354/.391 while scoring 67 runs, knocking in 55 and stealing 18 bases.
He was very good in the clutch, slashing .353/.416/.383 in 62 plate appearances with runners in scoring position. He was also the Mets Sterling Award winner (Team MVP) for the Sand Gnats.
The Mets selected Luis in the 10th round of the 2013 draft from Coral Springs Charter High School in Florida. His offensive skills have improved every year in the minors after being drafted because of his top notch defensive skills at shortstop.
The field for the qualifier in Panama will be teams from Colombia, Panama, France, and Spain. The winning team of the double elimination tournament earns a spot in the WBC taking place in 2017. This offseason started with four spots available but Team Australia took the first one with a victory over South Africa last Sunday.
We recently ranked out top 5 Mets shortstop prospects with Guillorme coming in at #3 after his great 2015 season. We also had the chance to talk to Luis earlier this offseason which you can read here.

Michael, do you know when the players will report to their respective practice teams? I am guessing a total of one week to ten days of them missing from camp
7-10 days sounds about right with what I have heard. I believe Luis will be getting into Panama a couple of days before it starts and I know that Dilson trained with Colombia already.
