Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports the New York Mets are calling up Mark Vientos to the majors. Vientos entered the season as MMN’s fifth ranking prospect.

Vientos replaces Starling Marte on the roster. Marte was placed on the 10 day IL. He has not played since suffering a non-displaced fracture in his right middle finger on September 6.

The Mets are clearly in need of more offense at the moment. They’ve lost four out of of their last six games averaging 1.8 runs per game in those losses.

In 101 games for Triple-A Syracuse, he has a 129 wRC+. Overall, he’s hitting .280/.358/.519 with 16 doubles, one triple, 24 homers, and 66 RBI.

As oft noted, Vientos really struggled over the first month of the season posting a .569 OPS. It is not unusual for Vientos to have a slow start to the season only to mash the rest of the season.

Vientos has done just that. Since May 3, he’s hitting .305/.377/.562 with 12 doubles, 23 homers, and 64 RBI.

Vientos is getting called up at the right time as he’s hot at the plate. He’s in the midst of a four game hitting streak with two multi-hit games. Over this stretch, he’s 6-for-17 (.353) with two walks (.421 OBP), one homer (.529 SLG), and one RBI.

One area where Vientos can really help the Mets is against left-handed pitching. In 130 plate appearances, he’s hitting .330/.408/.732 with six doubles, 13 homers, and 37 RBI.

Notably, the Mets acquired Darin Ruf to hit left-handed pitching, but he’s struggled. Since joining the Mets, he’s had a 21 wRC+.

Vientos can also be another pinch hitting option. Notably, the Mets are currently carrying Deven Marrero (career 38 wRC+) and Terrance Gore (career 67 wRC+). That’s in addition to having a catcher with Mets catchers combining for a woeful 57 wRC+.
