With Starling Marte headed to the 10 day IL with migraine issues, the New York Mets will recall Mark Vientos. Vientos is traveling to join the team in Boston for the weekend series against the Red Sox.

This will mark Vientos’ second stint in the majors this season. Vientos was called up on May 17 to help a fledgling Mets offense. He was sent back down on June 18 after struggling with very sporadic playing time.

In his 49 plate appearances, Vientos hit .178/.224/.244 with a homer and five RBI. He struck out 28.6% of his plate appearances.

After being sent down, Vientos has hit .264/.337/.494 with nine doubles, one triple, three homers, and 13 RBI. In Triple-A this season, Vientos has posted a 141 wRC+, which is a significant improvement over the 129 he posted at that level last season.

It will be interesting if Vientos will receive more playing time during this recall. At the moment, in addition to Marte landing on the IL, Tommy Pham has dealt with nagging injuries. Of note, he left the series finale against the Chicago White Sox.

Since Vientos’ demotion, Daniel Vogelbach continued to receive the bulk of the starts at DH. Over this time frame, Vogelbach has been hitting .259/.298/.407 with two doubles, two homers, and 11 RBI.

On the season, Vogelbach has a 97 wRC+. One the season, as a collective, the Mets have a 104 wRC+ from the DH position indicating they’ve been getting better production from their non-Vogelbach options.

Marte’s IL stint was back dated to July 17. As a result, if his migraine issues subside, he can be activated by the end of next week. This could potentially give Vientos a very short window to impress and make his case to stay on the roster through the rest of the season.
