The Major League Baseball international free agency signing period begins today, and the Mets are projected to sign a bunch of players in the $100,000 to $600,000 range.

Teams that received a Competitive Balance Pick in Round B of the 2020 MLB draft are given a pool of $6,431,000, while teams that received a Competitive Balance Pick in Round A are given $5,889,600. The Mets are not one of those teams, so they’re part of the remaining crop who get $5,348,100 each.

Unlike past years, the Mets are not expected to be making a seven-figure signing. In the past, they’ve paid big numbers for guys like Alexander Ramirez, Robert Dominguez, and of course Amed Rosario and Andres Gimenez.

One of the biggest names in this year’s class is outfield prospect Yoelqui Cespedes, younger brother of Yoenis Cespedes. He is expected to reach a deal with the Chicago White Sox.

Left-handed pitcher/outfielder Oscar Colas, the second-best international prospect according to MLB Pipeline, reportedly may end up waiting until January 2022, but that remains to be seen. The third-best, shortstop Wilman Diaz, is expected to sign with the Dodgers, while shortstops Carlos Colmenarez and Armando Cruz have received strong interest from the Rays and Nationals, respectively.

Jon Heyman of MLB Network reported some more signings on Thursday, namely outfielder Pedro Leon signing with the Astros, Pedro Pineda with the Athletics, and Cruz with the Nationals. All three of those deals are expected to be for $4M.

While the Mets aren’t expected to go after any of the big names, the players they are expected to sign include outfielders Johairo Cuevas and Gustavo Marquez. Their pitching haul is expected to include Elian Nuñez and Enderson Arevalo.
