The New York Mets have announced they have acquired right handed pitcher Adonis Medina from the Pittsburgh Pirates got cash considerations. He has been assigned to Triple-A Syracuse.

Medina, 25, made four appearances in the majors with the Philadelphia Phillies last season pitching 7.2 innings. He allowed three earned on nine hits, four walks, and three HBP while striking out six.

In Triple-A, Medina made 17 starts averaging almost four innings per start. He was 4-5 with a 5.05 ERA, 1.433 WHIP, 3.5 BB/9, and a 7.3 K/9.

It was not long ago Medina was regarded as one of the top prospects in baseball. Entering the 2019 season, Medina was the 57th best prospect in the game according to Baseball Prospectus and the 77th according to MLB Pipeline.

Medina throws a mid-90s fastball with movement. However, his velocity which was nearing the upper 90s has gone down a tick. His slider and change show promise but remain inconsistent. One of the biggest issues holding him back has been his command.

The Phillies, an organization who has has recent player development issues. designated him for assignment, and he was claimed by the Pirates. In a strange twist for Mets fans, the Pirates has designated Medina for assignment after signing former Met center fielder Jake Marisnick.

To make room for Medina on the 40 man roster, the Mets designated right handed reliever Yennsy Diaz for assignment. Diaz, 25, was one of three minor league pitchers the Mets received from the Toronto Blue Jays in the Steven Matz trade.

Diaz made 20 relief appearances for the Mets last season pitching 25 innings. He was 0-2 with a 5.40 ERA, 1.480 WHIP, 4.3 BB/9, and a 7.6 K/9.

He was assigned to Triple-A Syracuse to begin the season but did not make an appearance in the first two games. In 15 games with Syracuse last season, he was 0-3 with one save, a 6.75 ERA, 1.327 WHIP, 4.7 BB/9, and a 9.9 K/9.
