As the New York Mets continue selling at the trade deadline, they have traded outfielder Mark Canha to the Milwaukee Brewers for right-handed minor league starting pitcher Justin Jarvis.

The Mets have agreed to pay the remainder of Canha’s 2023 salary. However, the Brewers are responsible for Canha’s $11.25 million team option or paying the $2 million buyout.

Jarvis, 23, was the Brewers 2018 fifth round draft pick out of Lake Norman High School in Mooresville, NC. He will be Rule 5 Draft eligible, so it is likely the Mets obtained him with an eye toward is adding him to the 40 man roster before the deadline.

Jarvis began the year as MLB Pipeline’s 30th ranked Brewers prospect. However, he was having a strong season, and on the strength of that season, the expectation was he was going to rise in the rankings into the 16-20 range.

Baseball America rated Jarvis as the Brewers 12th best prospect in their midseason rankings. On the trade, Matt Eddy of Baseball America noted:

Jarvis pitches at 95 mph and tops out at 97, throws four pitches and paces himself well. His slider is his go-to secondary pitch, but all his pitches have defined shape. Jarvis is more control over command but has a chance to pitch at the back of a big league rotation.

This season, Jarvis has made 17 starts between Double-A and Triple-A. He is 6-6 with a 4.33 ERA, 1.420 WHIP, 3.9 BB/9, and a 10.5 K/9.

He has struggled in his three starts since he was promoted to Triple-A. He is 0-2 while allowing 14 earned over 11 2/3 innings. He walked 12 and struck out 11.

At the moment, MLB Pipeline had rated Jarvis as the Mets 13th best prospect. Interestingly enough, that puts him one spot ahead of Coleman Crow, who was obtained in the Eduardo Escobar trade. This is an indication as to how much these recent trades are improving the Mets organization.
