Mike Vorkunov of the The Star-Ledger writes that there is still uncertainty between the Mets and the Las Vegas 51s as to where the club will have their Triple-A affiliate for the 2015 season, because the contract between the two parties expires after this year.
Las Vegas President and COO Don Logan tells Vorkunov that he and Mets GM Sandy Alderson spoke several weeks ago about the situation but that it will be decided at the appropriate time.
“We’ll get to it when it’s time to get to it,” said Logan. “It’s been a good alliance for us, I can tell you that.”
“I think the geography is going to come into play. If there is a team on the East Coast available it just makes more sense maybe for them. But if you’re going to be in the West this is the best place to be because we have tons of air access to everywhere in the country,” adds Logan.
Alderson tells the Star-Ledger on Saturday that he would not discuss what the options for the future are for the Mets’ Triple-A club.
“We’ll just have to see how things develop,” says Alderson. “Let’s face it, we didn’t anticipate being here last year, so. The last thing I’m going to do is speculate about next year. But we’ve got a good relationship with the 51s staff here. I’ve known Don Logan a long time. There are some positives aspects to being out here frankly.”
It seems odd for a team that calls their home on the East Coast to have a Triple-A affiliate basically on the other side of the country. It probably would make more sense for the Mets to rethink their plans for 2015, and find a location a lot closer to home. It actually would make travel between both clubs a lot easier for the players.
