As reported by MMN‘s Jacob Resnick, the New York Mets have claimed OF Bryce Brentz from the Pittsburgh Pirates. As noted by Resnick, it is unknown what the Mets immediate plans are with the former first round draft pick. However, as Resnick notes, the Mets moved Rafael Montero to clear a spot for him on the 40 man roster.
Brentz, 29, was purchased by the Pirates earlier this season after the Red Sox had outrighted him from the 40 man roster to make room for J.D. Martinez. The Pirates had brought Brentz to Spring Training to compete for a backup outfield spot, but ultimately, Jose Osuna outplayed him in Spring Training. The Pirates attempts to slip him to their Triple-A affiliate were stymied with the Mets, sixth on the waiver wire, claimed the outfielder.
Last year, Brentz spent the entire season with the Red Sox Triple-A affiliate Pawtuckett Red Sox. In 120 games, Brentz would hit .271/.334/.529 with an International League leading 31 homers.
At the moment, it does not appear there is a spot for Brentz on the Major League roster with Jacob Rhame and Phillip Evans winning spots on the Opening Day roster. The team could attempt to move Juan Lagares as they have been doing for years.
Ultimately, the team may be looking to have Brentz play for Triple-A Las Vegas. In order for that to happen, the Mets would have to push him back through waivers. Even if Brentz were to pass through waivers, with his already having been previously outrighted by the Red Sox, he would have the opportunity to elect free agency.
As a result, this is a very fluid situation right now. Check back with MMN as we have more updates on the Mets roster moves.
