Jim Callis of MLB.com reports the New York Mets bonus pool for the 2023 draft will be $8,440,400. That amount is the 10th lowest in all of baseball. However, if you are looking for a bright side, it is actually the third most in the National League East.

Part of the Mets low bonus pool money is a direct result of Steve Cohen’s spending. As noted by Callis, the Mets “first-round pick dropped 10 spots from No. 22 because Mets exceeded competitive-balance tax threshold by more than $40 million.

As a result, the Mets will not draft until the 32nd overall pick. While technically still a first round pick, that pick falls in the category of the “Competitive Balance Round A” portion of the first round. With each pick being assigned a value through the first nine rounds, the Mets bonus pool money took a considerable hit.

The 32nd overall pick has an assigned value of $2,607,500. The Seattle Mariners, who now have the 22nd pick, have a bonus pool allotment for that pick in the amount of $3,496,600. As a result, the Mets lost $889,100 in bonus pool money. That will give the Mets less financial flexibility to go over slot to sign players in the early rounds.

The 2023 MLB Draft will be 20 rounds as ratified in the last CBA. The Mets selections through the first nine rounds with the slot bonus for each pick is as follows:

  1. First Round – 32nd overall ($2,607,500)
  2. Second Round – 56th overall ($1,474,500)
  3. Third Round – 91st overall ($747,600)
  4. Third Round – 101st overall ($666,500)
  5. Fourth Round – 123rd overall ($536,500)
  6. Fourth Round – 134th overall ($483,000)
  7. Fourth Round – 135th overall ($478,200)
  8. Fifth Round – 159th overall ($378,000)
  9. Sixth Round – 186th overall ($299,800)
  10. Seventh Round – 216th overall ($235,000)
  11. Eighth Round – 246th overall ($192,900)
  12. Ninth Round – 276th overall ($175,100)
  13. Tenth Round – 306th overall ($165,800)

The Mets will receive an extra third round selection because they were unable to sign Brandon Sproat last year after selecting him in the third round of the 2022 draft. The additional fourth round selections were due to Jacob deGrom signing with the Texas Rangers, and Chris Bassitt signing with the Toronto Blue Jays.
