With the 172nd overall pick in the sixth round of the 2021 Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft, the New York Mets select Carson Seymour. A 6’6”, 22-year-old RHP from Kansas State.

Seymour has a big frame and weighs in at 260 pounds, generating a significant amount of strength. He features significant velocity with his fastball reaching 99MPH and a slider that registers at 90MPH on a consistent basis. But with that comes significant issues with command.

“The fastball has generic life and doesn’t play to the velocity and he doesn’t have a ton of control so he’s always behind in counts without an opportunity to spin his breaking ball or use his changeup. Some believe he might be better off throwing sinkers rather than his four-seamer, but he’s a big guy with good stuff who should get a chance. “-Baseball America

While the velocity is impressive, scouts attraction to Seymour is his interesting breaking ball.

“He has an extremely interesting (breaking ball),” Rossini said. “He throws it hard … He throws it a 6 o’clock, which is great. It’s the pure 12-to-6 (shape). But the most unique part … he throws it with low spin. He throws it at like 1800 rpms.”-Baseball America

With a spin rate of 1,800 RPMs, Rapsodo, one of the leading technology companies in analytics ranks Seymour in their top 10 due to his funky breaking ball. While he’s certainly not a top ten caliber pitcher when all factors come in to play, it is interesting to see many publications having interest in him.

With the Mets giving Seymour the chance; the organization needs to focus on getting him innings. The big righty hasn’t spent a lot of time on the mound despite being involved with Dartmouth, the Cape Cod League, the Northwoods league, and his final stop at Kansas State.

Seymour adds to the arsenal of right handed pitchers the Mets have drafted over the course of the 24 hours.
