Keith Law of ESPN (Insider Only) ranked the Houston Astros as having the top minor league system in baseball. But the Mets actually received a solid ranking as well coming in as the sixth best system.

#6 New York Mets

The turnaround in this system is remarkable, especially when you consider they have not had a top-10 pick since they took Matt Harvey in 2010, and it puts the Mets in excellent shape relative to the other four teams in their division.

The decisions to trade R.A. Dickey and Marlon Byrd look even better in hindsight. The Mets also have one of the minors’ best collections of pitchers who throw strikes but aren’t strictly finesse guys.

…It’s great to see us getting some props for a change…

In my mind the Mets farm system will be one of the top if not, thee top system in the league after the 2014 season.  The Mets have really built up their farm system and have brought in some very good young prospects to mix with the ones they have been successfully developing over the past few years.

When you think about who the Mets have waiting their turn in the minors, the pitchers alone include Noah Syndergaard, Rafael Montero, Jacob deGrom, Steven Matz, and Jeff Walters, just to name a few. And when you add some of the position players, names like Kevin Plawecki, Brandon Nimmo, Dominic Smith, Dilson Herrera, Cory Vaughn, Cesar Puello or what about players that have already debuted in the majors just last season alone, like Zack Wheeler, Juan Lagares, Travis d’Arnaud, Wilmer Flores, Josh Satin, Wilfredo Tovar, Zach Lutz, Juan Centeno, Andrew Brown, and Matt den Dekker; wow, I can go on and on with the names of players to watch.  Just with the names above, you could probably field a talented team.

The Mets have done a tremendous job bringing together all of this talent, and it will be interesting to see how they truly pan out. There is never any guarantee that any of the prospects will live up to their potential, but if 2013 was any indication as to how good the Mets farm system was, especially having all the levels from Rookie to Triple A competing in their respective leagues to the very last day of the season and showcasing their skills in the playoffs, then 2014 can be just as good or even better.  It just speaks volumes for how good the Mets farm system has developed over the last few years. The next few seasons should see the Mets remain at the top of the list as the best farm system in baseball.

Thoughts from Joe D.

I was kind of wondering how Law and other minor league experts would view the Mets system after reading some other sites projecting us as a middle of the pack system. Given what we’ve pumped out to the majors in the last 18 months I found that hard to believe, especially with some Top 100 Prospects still on the way. If you still can’t see that this organization is getting better, you need new glasses.
