As the draft draws closer many of the top draft analysts are updating their mock drafts. Baseball America just released their third mock and they now have the Mets drafting Hartford lefty Sean Newcomb.
This is an important shift from the team at BA, who tabbed the Mets to take outfielder Michael Conforto in their first two mocks.
That means that arguably the three most popular mock drafts– ESPN‘s Keith Law, MLB.com‘s Jonathan Mayo, and now Baseball America– agree on who will be the Mets selection come June 5th.
Here’s what John Manuel of BA had to say about what he’s hearing:
In our first two projections we had the Mets selecting Oregon State outfielder Michael Conforto, who is generally regarded as the best college hitter in the class, but now it looks like they’ll choose between Turner or Newcomb if they are available.
Newcomb currently sports a 1.25 ERA in 14 starts for Hartford.
Seems like a good choice, however, I would not be surprised if Mets draft Zimmer. Much like Cecchini, he has the bloodlines that the Mets find comforting for top picks. Newcomb would be great choice. Either way I’d be happy. I thought I read somewhere that Conforto really doesn’t have a position because of lack of defensive skill set but I could be wrong about that as I am not going to look for a review before I post this.
You’re right about Conforto. That’s been my biggest issue with the Mets being linked to him. There’s little questions about the bat, but I can’t get excited about a guy picked tenth overall who is expected to be a subpar leftfielder defensively.
Should be an interesting choice. Draft is loaded with potentially top of the rotation starters. Depodesta basically admitted that Mets drafted Nimmo over Jose Fernandez because they were looking at best position player and not necessarily best player available. The lack of a second round draft choice may push the Mets to select best available player which will most likely be a pitcher. Mets had been linked to Aaron Nola but he has fairly significant helium going into draft and probably will be gone before Mets draft. If Mets do go position player Zimmer would be safe bet but don’t count out the highly toolsy Michael Gettys. He is rebounding on draft boards and he profiles as high risk high reward Mets like.
