The Brooklyn Cyclones would win their first outright New York Penn League title this season. There were a number of offensive performances which helped lead the Cyclones to that title. There were also some impressive performances across the DSL and GCL with the Mets drafting a number of collegiate upper classmen to help execute the team’s draft strategy of signing Matthew Allan in the third round.

The two biggest standouts of the season were first round draft pick Baty and the 17-year-old Alvarez, who was playing in his first pro season after receiving a new team-record $2.7 million international bonus in 2018. Baty was called up to Brooklyn to help them win the championship by going 3-for-9 at the plate with two runs, a double, and two walks.
As for Alvarez, his 155 wRC+ led all of the Mets minor league system for players with at least 150 plate appearances. That is special production coming from any position on the field let alone from the catcher position.
