Six weeks into the season and players are beginning to separate themselves from their peers at each level. This past week we had our first notable promotion, a major league veteran officially return from injury, and continued domination by familiar players.
Who’s Hot:
Paul Sewald – Las Vegas 51s
Sewald has continued his stellar pitching, lowering his ERA to 2.08, his WHIP to an outstanding 0.92 on the season. He has a Bartolo like 10.00 K/BB ratio and has four saves as the 51s closer.
Josh Smoker – Las Vegas 51s
Another week and another Smoker sighting on the list. He hasn’t allowed a run since April 23rd, a walk since April 26th, and now has six holds on the year. He is currently sporting a 3.08 ERA and an amazing 16.2 k/9.
Robert Gsellman – Binghamton Mets
He continues to increase his stock every time he takes the mound. He has lowered his ERA to 1.77, his WHIP to 1.01, and opponents are batting a minuscule .194 against him on the season.
Akeel Morris – Binghamton Mets
Since getting his National League Championship ring on April 26, Morris is 1-0, 1-1 in save opportunities and hasn’t allowed a run, while striking out eight in 6.2 innings of work.
Tim Peterson – St. Lucie Mets
Another arm that has been on all season as he continues to mow down A+ hitters. Peterson with a 0.63 ERA and 24 strikeouts in 14.1 innings should be on the short list of pitchers ready for a promotion.
P.J. Conlon – Columbia Fireflies
The 2015 13th round draft pick has anchored the Columbia rotation all season, going 5-0 with a 1.23 ERA. He has positioned himself to be the replacement for Delgado in the St. Lucie rotation.
Who’s Not:
Dario Alvarez – Las Vegas 51s
With Edgin returning, Smoker dominating and everyone healthy in the major league bullpen, Alvarez could find himself in off the 40 if he continues with the 7.15 ERA and 1.853 WHIP.
Mickey Jannis – Binghamton Mets
Continued his knuckleball like season, he has walked 19 batters in his last 23.2 innings and has pitched past the fifth inning in just one of his last five starts.
Josh Prevost – St. Lucie Mets
Failed to make it out for the 5th inning in his last outing. He has given up ten runs allowing 20 baserunners in his last 9.1 innings. The 6’8” NJ native has a 1.79 WHIP on the year.
Scaryln Reyes – St. Lucie Mets
The 26 year old continues to struggle in A+, he gave up five runs in his last outing on May 7, and actually lowered his ERA to 8.37. While his 12 strikeouts is matched by his 12 walks on the season, it may be time to look at him as a reliever where his fastball may play up.
Johnny Magliozzi – Columbia Fireflies
He has struggled since being a part of the No-Hitter that will become Fireflies lore. With his 7.36 ERA on the season he has given up five runs over his last three innings. Opponents are hitting .326 off him for the season.
Other pitching notes:
Josh Edgin has been optioned to Vegas and Casey Delgado made his AA debut were covered here.
Tyler Pill struck out 12 Fightin Phils on May 9th but allowed five earned runs in doing so, he also drove in two in the 5-3 loss.
