This is our first installment of Mets Minors Players of the Week now that each affiliate finally got a full week of games played. We used the entire season for the first edition because Binghamton and Las Vegas have had a few cancellations in the early going. Here are the choices for April 7-17:

Offensive Player of the Week – David Thompson (Columbia Fireflies)

This one is a pretty easy choice given that he had a hit in all 11 games he has played this year. The third baseman also knocked in 11 runs which is the second most in the South Atlantic League. His five doubles are third in the league and his eight runs scored are tied for fourth. Overall, he is hitting .324/.422/.595 in 45 plate appearances.

Honorable Mention: Maikis De La Cruz & Niuman Romero (Both for Binghamton Mets)

Outfielder De La Cruz has played in only five games but has gotten off to a fast start for the B-Mets hitting .333/.455/.667 with four RBI and three doubles. The veteran infielder Romero hit .321/.441/.500 with six walks and a league leading five doubles.

Starting Pitcher of the Week – Chase Ingram (Columbia Fireflies)

Ingram has looked very good in his first two starts in full season ball going 10 innings allowing only one run (1.80 ERA). The right-hander has struck out 15 batters compared to just one walk. He has thrown 154 pitches with 107 of them coming for strikes. His fastball has been sitting in the 90-91 MPH range with a big breaking ball in the mid 70’s.

Honorable Mention: Robert Gsellman (Binghamton Mets)

Gsellman is 1-0 with a 1.46 ERA and 0.811 WHIP in his first 12.1 innings of the 2016 season. He has allowed only seven hits and three walks while striking out nine. He reportedly hit 98 MPH in his first start of the year.

Relief Pitcher of the Week – Tim Peterson (St. Lucie Mets)

The 25-year old right-hander has pitched five innings this year and has allowed only one baserunner (walk). He has also struck out ten of the 16 batters he has faced.

Honorable Mention: Kevin McGowan (St. Lucie Mets)

After pitching almost exclusively over the past two seasons the right-hander has made three relief appearances for St. Lucie to start 2016. He has allowed two runs in 6.2 innings while striking out 13 batters in that span.

Unfortunately, not all the Mets affiliates have games available on MiLB.tv making it hard to evaluate all the players defensively. The best player I have seen though, is Columbia Fireflies shortstop Milton Ramos who has shown off plus range and a strong arm.
