Las Vegas vs. Fresno – Rained out

New Hampshire 8, Binghamton 1

This was a disappointing effort by the B-Mets on both sides. Binghamton only had six hits and only one went for extra bases. New Hampshire got out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning with an RBI groundout by Rowdy Tellez. That score held until the bottom of the fourth. Dominic Smith started the frame with a single, his first hit of the year, and Matt Oberste followed that with a double to left-center which Smith came around to score from first base.

The wheels came off for Tyler Pill in the top of the fifth. With two on and two outs, Pill walked Fields to load the bases then issued another walk to Jon Berti, which allowed Jorge Saez to score from third. Following that, Dwight Smith Jr hit a two-run single to center, scoring Fields and Jorge Flores to give New Hampshire a 4-1 lead.

New Hampshire increased their lead in the sixth when Saez drove home K.C. Hobson with an RBI double. That was followed by Shane Opitz scoring on a sacrifice fly from Jorge Flores.  In the top of the seventh, the Fisher Cats added another run when Berti scored on a Hobson sac fly. The lead was extended to 8-1 when Ian Parmesley scored on a RBI ground out from Dwight Smith Jr. Smith Jr. had a career day with four RBI’s.

Pill (0-1) took the loss giving up four runs on five hits, two walks and four strikeouts in five innings of work. Luis Mateo made his first appearance of the season after having injury riddled campaigns in 2013, 2014, and 2015. He pitched one inning, giving up an unearned run with a walk and a strikeout.

Oberste led the Mets offense going 2-4 with an RBI double. Other than that, it was a very quiet day offensively for the Mets. Box Score

St Lucie 4, Jupiter 3

Josh Edgin made his first appearance since Tommy John surgery and he got the start in this one but it did not last long. He gave up a walk and a single to the first two batters he faced. He followed that with striking out Brian Anderson and allowed a sac fly to Ard before being replaced by Ricky Knapp. Edgin threw 27 pitches, 15 of which were strikes. Knapp delivered a solid outing, pitching 5.1 scoreless innings while only allowing four hits, striking out four batters, and walking none.

With the game tied 1-1 in the fourth, the Mets produced four consecutive singles to take a 2-1 lead. In the fifth, John Mora made it a 3-1 game with an RBI double. Kevin Taylor followed that up with an RBI single to make it a 4-1 ball game.

Alberto Baldanado settled down after a poor previous appearance by pitching a scoreless inning and struck out two batters. In the bottom of the ninth, Robert Coles had a shaky performance, giving up a two-run homer to Taylor Ard making it a 4-3 game. After that, Coles settled down, recording three straight outs via the fly ball. Coles earned his first save of the season.

Injury note, Wuilmer Becerra was out of the lineup the day after being removed in the 4th inning. St. Lucie broadcaster Adam MacDonald called it a nagging injury that should only hold him out a few days. Box Score

Charleston 6, Columbia 5

This was another discouraging loss for the Fireflies: another game where they blew the save in the ninth, just like their first two games. Simon De la Rosa got the start for the Riverdogs and it wasn’t pretty due to his poor command. He only lasted 1.2 innings and in the second inning he issued three straight walks leading to his departure. With two outs in the top of the second inning, Jeff Diehl got on base with a walk which was followed by a double to right field by Joe Tuschak putting runners on second and third. De la Rosa then issued three straight walks that gave the Fireflies a 2-0 lead. In the fourth, Kevin Kaczmarski drove in a run with an RBI single to left field to make it 3-0.

After being impressive for the first three innings, the fourth inning was not as smooth for Kevin Canelon. Trey Amburgey got things started with a double and then advanced to third on a subsequent wild pitch. Chris Gittens drove in the runner with a double to right field followed by a double for Connor Spencer which drove in another run and put the game at 3-2. The following inning, Dash Winningham hit a single and was driven in by a David Thompson triple. Thompson later scored following an error made by the second basemen.

Holding a 5-2 lead in the 7th inning, the Fireflies gave up two runs to make it a 5-4 game. After pitching a 1-2-3 eighth Witt Haggard stayed on to close out the game, walking the bases loaded before giving up a two-run single to end the game.

In what has to be one of the craziest four game series I have ever seen, the Fireflies drop three games on walk-offs while winning their first game ever on a combined no-hitter. Box Score
