Steven Matz 550x304

RENO 7, LAS VEGAS 4

Greg Peavy started this game for the 51s and had one of his worst performances of the season. He gave up seven earned runs and four walks, through three innings while striking out two. The bullpen arms of Jeff Walters, Erik Goeddel and Ryan Reid, who each pitched two innings, quieted the Reno bats for six scoreless innings, but the damage was already done. The 51s offensive leaders for the day included Kirk Nieuwenhuis, who had two hits including a triple and scored a run. Juan Centeno and Omar Quintanilla each had two hits of their own and Quintanilla also drove in two runs. Cesar Puello, who has had trouble finding his way into the starting lineup consistently, only tallied one official at-bat after being hit by pitches twice, once by starting pitcher Lucas Harrell and again by reliever Kevin Munson. On the opposition, Didi Gregorious, the long-rumored possible shortstop target for the Mets, had two hits and a walk and scored twice to propel the Reno offense. The 51s return home tomorrow for a two-game set against Reno.

NEW BRITAIN 6, BINGHAMTON 1

The Binghamton Mets had a quite game offensively while starting pitcher Alex Panteliodis struggled. Over 3.2 innings, Panteliodis gave up five earned runs and five walks while striking out two. This was the 23-year old’s first start this season in double-A after making one start in the FSL. Opposing pitcher Pat Dean earned the win while pitching 5.2 innings and giving up no runs while walking three and striking out four. The bright spot in this game for Binghamton was Darrell Ceciliani who managed to reach base four times with two walks and two hits The team was two for 12 with runners in scoring position which was the cause of their lack of offensive production Sunday. They will have the day off Monday before traveling to Altoona for a three-game series.

 ST. LUCIE 6, DAYTONA 0

Steve Matz shined in this game to earn his 3rd win of the year. He pitched 6.2 innings while giving up no runs, striking out four and walking two. He gave up four hits the entire game. Paul Sewald and Beck Wheeler pitched 1.1 and 1.0 innings respectively out of the pen two secure the shutout for St. Lucie. Gilbert Gomez, Jairo Perez, Phillip Evans and Aderlin Rodriguez had two hits a piece on the offensive. Rodriguez knocked his 5th home run of the year off of starting pitcher Taylor Scott. Dilson Herrera reached base with a hit and a walk and stole two bases to give him 13 on the year. St. Lucie returns home to play Daytona on Monday.

SAVANNAH 4, ROME 3

John Gant started for the Sand Gnats and pitched well. In seven innings, he gave up three earned runs, four strikeouts and two walks. However, he did not earn the win. L.J. Mazzili led the Gnats offense with three hits including his 6th home run of the year. Third basemen Jeff McNeil also had three hits and three RBI’s. Top prospects Gavin Cecchini and Dominic Smith both went hitless. However, Cecchini did reach base once with a walk.

METS MINORS PLAYER of the NIGHT

Steve Matz earns this honor tonight with one of his strongest pitching performances of the season. The left-hander was compared earlier this season to Clayton Kershaw. Matz, who was sidelined for the majority of the beginning of his career since being drafted in 2009 by injury, has shown that when healthy, he is a legitimate big league prospect. He is 3-3 this season with a 1.95 ERA. If he continues on this pace, he should earn a promotion to double-A later this summer.
