AAA: Syracuse Mets 6 (7-13) vs. Rochester Red Wings 4 (11-10) Box Score

Syracuse picked up the win Friday after dropping the first two games in the series to Rochester. The Mets scored three runs on back-to-back home runs in the 6th inning, the first for two runs from Nick Plummer before a solo shot from Daniel Palka. Palka’s sixth homer of the year moves him into a tie for third in AAA. Wyatt Young picked up three singles in the leadoff spot. The 15th-round pick out of Pepperdine now has a .469 OBP through his first 11 games in Syracuse.

Connor Grey was solid in his fourth start of the year, allowing a pair of runs on five hits while striking out five en route to his first win for Syracuse. Holderman entered in relief of Jose Rodriguez in the 8th and stranded a pair of runners. He’d let up a solo home run to Andrew Stevenson in the ninth but held on to a 6-4 lead to earn his first save of the season. Holderman has allowed two earned runs in his first 7.1 innings of the year, striking out five while walking two.

AA: Binghamton Rumble Ponies 2 (5-13) vs. Erie SeaWolves 0 (11-8) Box Score

The Rumble Ponies snapped a seven-game losing streak, despite only recording three hits, in the shutout victory over the SeaWolves. The game was scoreless until the bottom of the seventh inning when Brett Baty led off with a double and came around to score on a Hayden Senger sacrifice fly.

The Ponies picked up another run when a two-out Johneshwy Fargas single drove in Ronny Mauricio. Baty now has eight doubles through his first 17 games with a .845 OPS while Mauricio picked up his fourth stolen base in the contest.

Binghamton’s pitching was dominant on Friday, allowing just one hit while striking out a combined 14 SeaWolves’. Alec Kisena, signed as a minor-league free agent in 2019, was nearly perfect in his first win of the year, striking out eight over six innings.

Andrew Edwards, in his first game back with Binghamton after a stint on the development, picked up where Kisena left off before Michel Otanez picked up the save. Otanez has now allowed just one unearned run in 6.1 innings this season while striking out seven and issuing just one walk.

A+: Brooklyn Cyclones 3 (10-9) vs. Bowling Green Hot Rods 1 (13-6) Box Score

Brooklyn scored three runs on eight hits in the win, evening the series at two. Jose Mena drove in the first two runs in the first inning with a double before Tanner Murphy scored on a wild pitch in the fifth. Mena is now 10-for-31 to start the season. Wilmer Reyes stayed hot with his third multi-hit game in his last four contests while Warren Saunders, signed in 2018 out of the Bahamas, hit two of the Cyclones’ five doubles.

  •  RHP Oscar Rojas(W, 3-0, 1.83 ERA) 5.2 IP, ER, 5 H, BB, 6 K
  • LHP Cam Opp(S, 0-0, 0.00 ERA) 3.0 IP, 2 H, 3 BB, 2 K

Oscar Rojas was sharp again on Friday, striking out six Hot Rods while allowing just one earned run in 5.2 innings. Rojas, signed out of Mexico in 2017, has a 1.83 in 19.2 innings this season with 8.33 K/B. Cam Opp earned the save in his first appearance of the year, working around three walks and a pair of hits in three scoreless innings.

A:  St. Lucie Mets 4 (12-7) vs. Daytona Tortugas 3 (9-10) Box Score

St. Lucie scored four runs on 10 hits en route to a series-clinching win over Daytona. Shervyen Newton opened the scoring, driving in Stanley Consuegra in the first inning, before adding his second RBI on a double in the seventh. Newton now has nine doubles and a .855 OPS as he may be re-emerging as a prospect.

Consuegra and Ramirez continued their strong seasons, each recording a double in the win. Villavicencio, signed out of Mexico in 2021, picked up a double as well in his second game with St. Lucie.

  • RHP Calvin Ziegler: (0-1, 3.07 ERA) 4.1 IP, H, 9 K
  • RHP Luis Moreno(W, 1-0, 6.08 ERA) 3.2 IP, 2 ER, 2 H, 3 BB, 5 K
  • RHP Dylan Hall: (S, 1-0, 1.86 ERA) 1.0 IP, ER, 3 H, 2 K

Calvin Ziegler was the story in St. Lucie, striking out nine while allowing just one hit in 4.1 innings. Ziegler, who became the Mets’ top draft pick when they chose not to sign Kumar Rocker, has been impressive so far in St. Lucie but Friday’s start was his best so far. The Canadian-born right-hander features a mid-to-high 90’s fastball with the potential for a plus changeup and curveball. Still only 19-year-old, Ziegler is certainly a pitcher to watch in the Mets’ system.

Luis Moreno earned the win in relief despite allowing two runs on three walks and two hits. Dylan Hall allowed another run but held on for a one-run victory to earn his first save of the year.
