Wilmer Flores

TACOMA 6, LAS VEGAS 4

Logan Verrett would have his best start of the season wasted on Friday, as the Las Vegas 51’s bullpen couldn’t hold up their end of the bargain dropping the game against Tacoma 6-4.   Verrett would go a strong seven innings allowing just one run before handing the ball over to the bullpen.  The 51’s headed into the bottom of the 8th inning with a 3-1 lead.  They would limp to their half of the ninth trailing 6-3.  Tacoma sent 11 batters to the plate in a 5-run inning as the proverbial bottom dropped out from underneath the 51’s.  Las Vegas would end up having to use three pitchers to get out of the inning.  Wilmer Flores would belt two home runs and drive in two of the four runs in the losing effort.  Allan Dykstra and Brandon Allen would drive in the other two Las Vegas runs.  It was a very disappointing finish to the game on Friday, but Las Vegas will get the chance to bounce back against Tacoma on Saturday.  Dana Eveland is the scheduled starter for the 51’s.

BINGHAMTON 5, PORTLAND 1

Greg Peavey goes six innings picking up his first win of the season, as the Binghamton Mets take down the Portland Sea Dogs 5-1.  Peavey tallied four strikeouts bringing his season total to 19 in four starts.  Kyle Johnson provided much of the offense as he drove in two of the Mets runs.  Johnson went 2-for-3 and also scored a run.  Kevin Plawecki also had a multi-hit night for Binghamton going 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored.  As long as the weather holds up on Saturday, the Mets and Sea Dogs are scheduled to play a double header on Saturday starting at 12:05pm.  This will be the third double header for Binghamton so far this season.  Matthew Bowman and Darin Gorski are the scheduled starters for the Mets.

ST. LUCIE vs BRADENTON

Friday’s game was rained out and will be made up on Saturday as part of a double header.

SAVANNAH 2, ROME 1

The Savannah SandGnats would improve to 18-8 on the season, thanks to a balk, a hit batsman, and tremendous pitching, as they defeat the Rome Braves 2-1.  Miller Diaz would improve to 2-0 on the season as he lasted a season-high 6.1 innings allowing one run while striking out six.  The SandGnats bullpen would close the game out not allowing a hit in over two innings of work.  Darwin Frias would record his third hold of the season while Robert Coles picked up his fourth save.  Savannah would get on the board in the first inning thanks to a leadoff triple by Gavin Cecchini and a balk by Rome’s starting pitching Chuck Buchanan.  The SandGnats would pick up what would be the gamewinning run on a bases loaded hit by pitch by Tyler Vail.  The Braves would score a run of their own in the seventh inning but just couldn’t solve the SandGnats pitching when it was all said and done.  John Gant is scheduled to start on Saturday for Savannah in the second game of the four-game series.

METS MINORS PLAYER of the NIGHT

It has to be so frustrating for a pitcher to throw their best game of the season just to have it wasted with a poor performance from the bullpen.  Savannah and Las Vegas (with the exception of the bullpen) enjoyed solid pitching but when the dust settled the MMN Player of the Night honor goes to Wilmer Flores for his two dingers in the loss to Tacoma.
