Mets Minors Transactions: Araúz Selected, Sims Signed

The New York Mets announced they have selected the contract of 2B Jonathan Araúz from Triple-A Syracuse. This is the fourth straight season he will play in the majors.

He was selected by the Mets from the Baltimore Orioles in the minor league portio of the Rule 5 Draft in December 2022. He’s played 68 games in his Major League career hitting .200/.269/.314 with five doubles, five homers, and 22 RBI.

Araúz, 24, was in the starting lineup against the Kansas City Royals. In the game, he was 1-for-3 with two strikeouts.

He played 95 games for Syracuse hitting .244/.344/.429 with 14 doubles, three triples, 14 homers, and 49 RBI. As the Mets are looking for a new position for Ronny Mauricio, he has predominantly played shortstop this year.

In addition to Araúz being selected, right-handed reliever Phil Bickford was activated. With Araúz and Bickford joining the roster. With the new additions to the roster, catcher Michael Pérez and right-handed reliever Vinny Nittoli were optioned back to Triple-A Syracuse.

Pérez was active for one game before being sent back down. He did not appear in the game. Nittoli was recalled on July 30. Like Pérez, he did not appear in a game during this stint in the majors.

The Mets announced they signed non-drafted right-handed reliever Hale Sims. Sims, 23, pitched for UNC Charlotte last season.

Sims made four starts and 18 relief appearances. He was 2-0 with a 4.15 ERA, 1.333 WHIP, 4.4 BB/9, and a 9.2 K/9.

Michael Mayer of MMN reports outfielder Ryan Clifford has been assigned to the High-A Brooklyn Cyclones. Clifford, 20, was one of the two outfield prospects obtained by the Houston Astros in the Justin Verlander trade.

It had previously been announced Drew Gilbert, the other outfield prospect received in the Astros trade, was assigned to Double-A Binghamton. He will be joined on the roster by SS Jeremiah Jackson, who was obtained from the Los Angeles Angels in the Dominic Leone deal.
