Syracuse Mets – Drew Gagnon

Season Stats: 9-5, 3.36 ERA, 1.176 WHIP, 2.1 BB/9, 7.6 K/9
Week Stats: GS, W, 8.0 IP, H, 0 R, 0 ER, BB, 5 K

Gagnon pitched seven perfect innings against the Durham Bulls. After Mac James spoiled perfection, Gagnon induced a double play ball to ensure he would face the minimum through eight. Surprisingly, with his having thrown 91 pitches, he was not given the opportunity to complete the complete game shut out.

This is now two straight good starts for Gagnon, who needed more time to get back up to speed after spending time in the Mets bullpen. On that note, if Gagnon is back to pitching at this level, it may make sense to give him another short in the Major League bullpen. That goes double when you consider how Chris Mazza isn’t being trusted at all right now.

Binghamton Rumble Ponies – David Peterson

Season Stats: 3-4, 4.14 ERA, 1.359 WHIP, 3.0 BB/9, 9.3 K/9
Week Stats: GS, 5.0 IP, H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 3 K

Peterson has pitched well since coming off the Injured List allowing just two hits over 8.1 innings pitched. While his first start was his throwing just 3.1 innings, he was allowed to throw more pitches and go deeper into the game against the Hartford Yard Goats.

The sinker ball pitcher recorded the first four outs of the game on the ground, and he did not allow a hit until there were two outs in the fourth. Had he not recently come off the Injured List, at 63 pitches, he typically would have been permitted to go deeper into the game.

Overall, starts like these are a positive development for Peterson. Not only do they show he is healthy and able to pitch, but they also are strides forward in his development. That is important because he is the Mets top pitching prospect above the Single-A level.

St. Lucie Mets – Tylor Megill

Season Stats: 6-4, 3.02 ERA, 1.200 WHIP, 3.5 BB/9, 12.1 K/9
Week Stats: 2 GS, 2 W, 10.1 IP, 6 H, R, ER, 3 BB, 18 K

After spending much of his professional career as a reliever, Megill became a full-time starter on July 3. With each passing start, he has gotten stronger and stronger, and he just put together his two best starts of the season this past week.

Fort Myers needed a Miracle against him. Over 5.1 innings, they could only muster two hits and two walks while striking out 10 times. Megill set the tone in that game striking out the side in the first and striking out four of the first five batters he faced. In addition to striking out the first three he faced in the game, he would strike out the last four batters he faced.

He followed that up with a nearly as dominant performance against the Daytona Tortugas allowing one unearned run on four hits over 5.0 innings while walking one and striking out eight.

Columbia Fireflies – Hayden Senger

Season Stats: .301/.411/.417, 7 2B, 3B, HR, 18 RBI, CS
Week Stats: .400/.571/.600, 2 2B, 3 RBI

Senger started getting attention when he had a great June hitting .345/.400/.618, but he would cool off hitting just .230/.298/.297 in July. So far, he has turned things back around in August looking not just like he did in June, but also showing some of the promise he had as an offensive catcher when the Mets drafted him in the 24th round of the 2018 draft.

Senger has recorded a hit in four of the six August games while reaching safely in five of those games. His three doubles this month has matched his total extra base hits in July, and it matched his total of extra base hits in May. Overall, this month and the rest of the season can show us all just how much of a prospect he should be viewed as going forward.

Brooklyn Cyclones – Garrison Bryant

Season Stats: 3-1, 3.23 ERA, 0.916 WHIP, 2.3 BB/9, 8.2 K/9
Week Stats: GS, 6.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 5 K

Bryant is currently on an impressive six start streak where he has allowed one earned or fewer while averaging six innings per start. In each of his last four starts, he has a quality start allowing more than three hits just once while walking one or fewer in each start. Overall, he has made 10 starts for Brooklyn, and he has allowed more than two earned runs just twice.

With his recent scoreless six inning start, Bryant continues working his way up the New York Penn League leader boards. He is currently ranked seventh in ERA, eighth in innings pitched, 11th in strikeouts, and second in WHIP.

Kingsport Mets – Wilfred Astudillo

Season Stats: .310/.375/.471, 2 2B, 4 HR, 13 RBI
Week Stats: .545/.615/1.091, 2 HR, 3 RBI

The younger brother of Twins folk hero Willians Astudillo has been scorching hot at the plate of late. The switch hitter has a six game hitting streak, and he has recorded a hit in nine of his last ten games. In August, he has a hit in all five games he has played with him having a multi-hit game in four of those five games. One thing that is really impressive of this August stretch is he has three walks to just one strikeout.

Gulf Coast Mets – Ryan Shinn

Season Stats: .255/.394/.364, 6 2B, 2 HR, 14 RBI, 5 SB, 2 CS
Week Stats: .357/.609/.714, 2 2B, HR, 4 RBI, 2 SB

The Mets 34th round draft pick from this year’s draft had a great week with one-third of his season total of doubles, 40 percent of his stolen bases, and half of his homers. Arguably, his best game of the season came this past week when he was 2-for-3 with a run, two doubles, two RBI, and a walk in the August 10 game against the GCL Astros.

DSL Mets – Bradly Encarnacion

Season Stats: .202/.392/.248, 6 2B, 12 RBI, 11 SB, 2 CS
Week Stats: .400/.500/.533, 2 2B, RBI, 2 CS

The 17 year old Encarnacion had his first three hit game of his professional career on August 9. In the game, he was 3-for-5 with a double and a stolen base.
