Syracuse Mets – Travis Taijeron

Week Stats: .333/.455/.944, 2 2B, 3 HR, 10 RBI
Season Stats: .217/.336/.558, 8 2B, 11 HR, 28 RBI, SB

After a hot April, Taijeron cooled off considerably in May, but as the month is coming to a close, he’s on another hot tear. Taijeron currently has a three game hitting streak and has a hit in five of his last six games. He also has an extra base hit in each of his last three games and four of his last five. With the hot streak, Taijeron is back in the top 10 in the league in homers.

His best game of the week came on Saturday against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. In the game, Taijeron was 3-for-5 with a run, double, homer, a walk, and four RBI. While that game was not enough to snap Syracuse’s losing streak, Taijeron would play a big role in that on Monday knocking in the first run with an RBI double in Syracuse’s five run third inning where they took the lead.

Binghamton Mets – David Peterson

Week Stats: W, 5.0 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 8 K
Season Stats: 2-2, 3.82 ERA, 1.487 WHIP, 3.8 BB/9, 10.5 K/9

With his recent string of success, the attention has been rightly focused on Anthony Kay. That has left Peterson under the radar, which is a bit surprising considering he did enter the year as the higher ranked prospect on most rankings.

Peterson had yet another good outing on Tuesday not allowing an earned run in his five innings of work. While the Baysox did score two runs against him, they did need errors from Ruben Tejada and Luis Carpio to do it as well as an infield single to Tejada. Really, the runs were gifted to the Baysox.

With that outing, Peterson now has four consecutive starts allowing one earned or fewer, and he has allowed four or fewer hits in three consecutive starts. Impressively, he has recorded seven plus strikeouts in three of his last four starts.

More than any of that, the key for Peterson is his sinker doing its job. Over his last three starts, 50 percent of the balls put in play have been on the ground. In his last start, nine of the 12 balls put in play were on the ground. More than the strikeouts, the improved ground ball rate is a promising sign for Peterson going forward.

St. Lucie Mets – Quinn Brodey

Week Stats: .550/.609/.700, 3 2B, 3 RBI, SB
Season Stats: .271/.318/.395, 11 2B, 3B, 3 HR, 30 RBI, 7 SB, CS

In April, it seemed Brodey was figuring things out, and he was emerging to be the player the Mets envisioned he could be when he was drafted. Unfortunately, Brodey has struggled in May. That is, until recently.

Over the past week, Brodey has a five game hitting streak with four multi-hit games. He’s scored a run in four of the last five games, and he has an RBI in three straight.

His most impressive game was Friday against Lakeland. In the game, Brodey was 4-for-4 with a run, RBI, and a stolen base. His fifth inning steal put him in scoring position ahead of a Manny Rodriguez RBI single. His sixth inning RBI single would prove to be the winning run of the game.

It should also be noted his game prior to that was an outstanding effort. In that game, he was 2-for-4 with two doubles, a run, and an RBI. In that game, he hit an eighth inning double and would later score on a wild pitch to tie the game and help send it to extras.

Columbia Fireflies – Shervyen Newton

Week Stats: .364/.417/.682, 2 2B, 3B, HR, 3 RBI
Season Stats: .167/.244/.259, 5 2B, 3B, HR, 5 RBI

After beginning the season in Extended Spring Training, it has taken a while for Newton to get going. However, now that he has, we should look for him to continue the hot hitting and for him to build off of his strong 2018 season. That’s especially true with his swing looking the best it has as a professional:

Newton currently has a six game hitting streak, and he has reached safely in nine straight games. Impressively, he is performing at this level while splitting time between second, third, and short. The time splitting is somewhat a function of the Mets wanting their players to be more versatile and a function of trying to figure out the best positions for each of their talented teenage prospects on the roster.

Newton’s best game was Friday against Greenville. In a game started Alex Scherff, the Red Sox’s 21st ranked prospect according to MLB Pipeline, Newton was 2-for-3 with a run, double, homer, a walk, and an RBI. This is exactly the player who we grew accustomed to seeing last year, and it may very well be the player we see the rest of the season.
